Trivia:
- Farah Khan wanted singer Shakira to make a special appearance in this film by performing a song. Farah choreographed Shakira's 2006 MTV Music Video Awards performance and knew that she was a huge Bollywood fan. Due to scheduling, Shakira was not able to participate in the film.
- Composer A.R. Rahman was meant to compose the songs for this film, but had to decline due to other commitments.
Farah Khan was originally going to make a film called "Happy New Year." The film was to be a romantic comedy set at New Year's Eve and would star Shahrukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, Raveena Tandon, Amitabh Bachchan, Manisha Koirala, Sanjay Dutt, Zayed Khan and Priyanka Chopra. However, due to the actors' scheduling conflicts, she scrapped the idea and chose another concept based on/inspired from various 1970s films.
- The title of the film is taken from a 1970s-style disco song in Subhash Ghai's Karz (1980). Ghai himself makes an appearance in this film.
Shahrukh Khan's character Om Prakash Makhija is named after 1970s actor Om Prakash.
Shanti's film is called "Dreamy Girl," after Dream Girl (1977), the 1970s hit that took Hema Malini to super-stardom (and also landed her with her iconic nickname of Dream Girl).
The yesteryear cars used in the film originally belonged to Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini.
The song "Dard-E-Disco" was originally to be shot with only Shakira, but her upcoming concert tours rendered her unavailable. Then Farah Khan recalled a promise Shahrukh Khan made to her when shooting the song "Jiye Jale" in Dil Se.. (1998): that if he would show his abs for another film, it would be for a film she was directing. She called upon his promise, and he shot for the song.
It was director Farah Khan's desire to bring Sanjay Dutt, Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Saif Ali Khan together on screen for the first time ever. However, Aamir Khan was unable to shoot for the film, since he was busy shooting his film Taare Zameen Par (2007).
Actress Deepika Padukone's first Hindi film.
Dev Anand was approached to make an appearance in the film, but he made it clear that he does not believe in blink-and-miss special appearances

Trivia:
- When Hrithik Roshan watched Shahrukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan play the reconciliation scene he was so impressed and intimidated by the acting that he was unable to complete his own shot. He had to do it the next day after Amitabh had calmed him down and reassured him that everything would be fine.
- Most expensive Indian film released so far (December 2001).
It was one of the first Indian films that had a making-of book written for it.
- The song "It's Raining Men" was used without permission from the right holders. The director was sued in an UK court and was sentenced to pay.
- Continuity: Before the song "You Are My Soniya", when Poo is hitting on Rohan, she is wearing two different shoes. Then in the song she is wearing two of the same shoes.
- Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Years later when Rohan meets Pooja again, after he recites the tongue twister "Chandu ka Chacha," he says he finally got it. But he forgets to say the line "chandni raat mein," so he doesn't get it right.
- Anachronisms: After Hrithik comes to stay at SRK's home in England, one morning Hrithik gives a lift to SRK to his office as his car tire is punctured. On the way, they put on a match commentary. The match is taking place in England (Oval) and it is morning. They say that only last over is remaining and after some time they declare that India has won. The match is ending around 9 - 10 AM so would have to have started around 2AM.

The logo that appears on the helicopters in the movie is actually the logo for Yash Raj films but in the movie it was intended to be the logo of Yash Raichand's company.
This film bears some similarities with the director's previous film 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' namely:- The two pivotal lovers in both films are named Rahul and Anjali Sharma and are both played by the same actors. The first half of the film is told mainly in flashback structure ending in a character vowing to bring other characters together; 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' also used this narrative. During a playful argument between Rahul and Anjali, Anjali snaps 'I don't like jokes' with Rahul replying 'I don't like you' in a mock voice. This references verbatim the first basketball scene from 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'. Contains part of the melody from 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai's title song on both the opening logo and during the song "Suraj Hua Maddham".
Abhishek Bachchan had done shooting for a cameo role, but later he asked the director to remove his scene from the final copy of the movie.
Aishwarya Rai was considered for a part in the movie.
Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri dance to famous song "Aati Kya Khandala." The song is from Rani Mukherjee's first hit film, Ghulam (1998).
Goofs:
- Crew or equipment visible: At the start of the song "Dewana Hai Dekho" when Hrithik Roshan opens the door of the red car, the cameraman is reflected in the door.
Anachronisms: The first half of the story is set circa 1991. The cast are shown using equipment such as notebook PCs, a Nokia communicator palmtop computer/mobile phones. They also make references to the use of email. In 1991 the technologies depicted either did not exist or, in the case of email, were not in general use.
