"Yes, I was abused" - Bipasha Basu

By Subhash K. Jha, December 3, 2007 - 12:02 IST

With a shudder Bipasha remembers the incident of racial abuse in the UK. "During the shooting of Goal Arshad Warsi and I were waiting at the signal at the location. At the red light two white guys dressed really weirdly leaned out of the car window and started rapping out the most disgusting racist song. That was their unique way of insulting us."

Bipasha says she has never felt more humiliated as a human being, woman and a celebrity. "It took me a while to understand what was happening. Arshad and I just kept looking at each other in helpless amazement as their song went on and on. And mind you, this was in the most densely populated Asian locality in Southall. They called us Pakis and many dirty things. The insult was targeted more at me as their lewd song was more girl-driven."

Bipasha was horrified to learn this kind of attack was considered normal among Asians in Britain. "They said, it's nothing to get alarmed about…. 'Welcome to the UK'. How can any community or people accept such humiliation lying down?! I've been subjected to unbecoming behaviour and I've retaliated with vengeance. Even when I used to travel by auto I've slapped men who've behaved badly with me."

She says she's no stranger to discrimination and bias. "I'm dark-skinned and when I'm without makeup people actually try to make me feel good by saying, 'Arrey aap to itni gori hain. Screen pe itni kaali dikhti hain! ' Please, main gori nahin hoon. Let's get that very clear."

The mindsets on discrimination are changing, and Bipasha is proud to be part of that change. "On my website women objected so strongly when a men's fairness cream was launched. They wrote directly to me to say how much confidence I had given them by being dark-skinned and yet successful. I feel, as a celebrity I can make a difference in the way we perceive people outside our gender or social circle. After I lost a lot of weight and started looking after myself, so many girls consult me on my website about healthy….not about looking good or getting into hour-glass shape, mind you, but just being well. I feel every actor needs to be responsible in their conduct. Because people love us for who we are. We can't afford to let them down."

Now I really like Bipasha, but I reckon she needs to give it a rest...She has already given a number of interviews about this incident....Racial discrimination does exist in pockets, but not the entire UK is racist....And the ones who are racist do not confine their prejudice to Asians alone...Red-heads (or "ginger" as they are commonly known in the UK) face discrimination too....

even after the big brother incident, it's sad that people are not making the effort to change their viewpoints of darker skinned people.

like joie de vivre said, not everyone in the UK or US are racist.😊 there are some real gems of people you can find in these countries who treat everyone equally.

you go bips! show them what you're made of! she should have noted down the vehicle number of those racists & reported them immediately.😡

hhhmm...racism is in every country in all kinds of form...in some countries its under the carpet while in the others its very prominent. But one thing, i don't understand that why most Indians get so offended when they are called "Paki"...they make it sound like its the " F " word...its just a nationality....i know many girls that are paki and they get called Indians all the time yet they don't mind...Infact, some of my Indian frenz were called paki or arabs b/c of their skin tone and they didnt mind at all either...All of them say its fine b/c all desi do look similar. Racism is not okay but being called a paki or indian is not cursing. Then why make a huge deal out of it...simply state that u r not or ignore it b/c it wont change the fact.

Awwwww....this kind of behaviour is disgusting. But thankfully I've never encountered any because my skin is light and I blend in.People usually think I'm white until I tell them I'm a South Asian!LOL.

You go Bips. You should be proud of your skin color and never let these 🤬 make you feel awkward bout your skin color. We all come in different colors just like a pack of crayons.

Bips change the idea of people thinking that light skinned are beautiful, now bips is dark skinned and beautiful 😛

OMG, I know so many people who went to UK or lived there, they said that everyone they met from UK is rude so I don't want to go to UK.

In the US, they have some racist people 😕 but oh well, I deal with racist people most of the time which makes me want to stop going to school or work but I start to think that it's not worth, I'm not going to ruin my life because of what racist person thinks of me 😡

The British are generally quite taciturn, unlike Americans who seem to be more informal and friendly, just like Asians....In Britain, you go to the same bus stop everyday and travel with the same people, but you rarely ever talk to them....Ever and anon, not being garrulous is misunderstood as being "rude"....And sometimes, we Asians come across as "loud and rude" to the odd British person who is impossibly polite and expects the same behaviour which South Asians aren't accustomed to....I mean, for instance, we Asians aren't used to saying sorry to someone who has trodden on our foot by accident, are we??😆
