Gauri – The Unborn: Scary documentary
indya.com rating: 2 out of 5 *
Cast: Atul Kulkarni, Rituparna Sengupta, Anupam Kher and baby Rushita Pandya.
Director: Aku Akbar
Synopsis: A happy family comprising of Roshni (Rituparna), her husband Sudeep (Atul Kulkarni) and their daughter Shivani (Rushita) decides to go on a holiday to their family home in a remote place. From their arrival unusual events start taking place. The initially bizarre appearing incidents suddenly start becoming scarier for all of them. It turns out that it is actually the couple's past which is haunting them. How they try to overcome their past mistake and save their child forms the rest of the story.
Acting: National award winner actress, Rituparna is most of the time confined to either sporting a scared expression or left to crying. Atul Kulkarni, another multiple National Award winner actor, pitches in his best but then again the role has nothing to offer. He rather looks confused at times because of the faulty characterisation. Little Rushita Pandya, who plays their daughter, proves to be the best of the lot and carries the film on her shoulders well. Anupam Kher is wasted in a miniscule role.

Direction: Debutante Aku Akbar has got a good message to convey about girl child abortion but was there a need to convey such a noble cause through horror elements? The impact is reverse as you end up laughing at the suspense factor of the film instead of getting shocked. He should have also avoided use of loud background score which at times takes your attention away from what is unfolding on the screen.

Script: The biggest drawback of the film is the loose script. It just doesn't work. It starts of as a suspense thriller but then deviates in the second half to something totally else. A simple narrative would have rather helped the cause much better but what it has ended up is being - a scary documentary on female foeticide.

Music: Well there is nothing much to talk about Raju Singh's music as what one only remembers is the loud background score given throughout the movie.
