A: One explaination could be convincing acting which can indulge the viewer. The more important reason however probably is that box office is about supply-demand economics, with visuals being the commodity. The hit films present to the viewer visual shots that viewer can not easily see or create themselves. Any ordinary man can grow a beard. The consumer intuitively knows that he too can grow a beard like Abhishek Bachchan by simply not shaving. He does not need to pay Rs. 300 to see that or any sub-professional dancing. But to grow a six pack at any age takes effort, dedication, and maintainence, something they can't easily duplicate themselves. So visuals of a physically fit actor who is also a convincing actor like Khan gives them value for their buck (paisa vasool), whereas the same is not true when they are asked to fork up for a ticket for some equally mediocre cinema of Abhishek Bachchan who at this point is selling competent acting only, putting lesser emphasis on style and visuals. Unless Abhishek Bachchan works on this latter aspect; a film depending primarily on him for commercial entertainment will have difficulty emerging at the box office. To be fair, he is capable of carrying a film and has had the unique audience support to survive 17 flops, but whether he has work ethic to do the training to be able to rise above the script and be a safe investment hero in the commercial format like a Shahrukh, Hrithik or a Salman Khan remains to be seen.
