Saawariya is based on the short story white nights, it's a good interpretation of a sad tale of unrequited love. Beautiful blue and calm colours are shown in the background, and a fairy tale land is used to express the unusual love story. The story and screenplay has been kept short and simple. SLB has taken out good performances out of Ranbir, Sonam, Rani Mukherji, and the old lady who plays lillypop. In the story no sparks fly between sakina and Raj and sakina never feels love for Rambir Raj, however they are scenes where she feels attracted and in somewhat love with Ranbir Raj, like in the song Thode Badmash, or at the end when she starts to accept his love for him, they share a cute friendship also, but the screenplay wasn't enough for aam janta to get what was actually cooking between the two main leads, and no one had the idea that they'll be in a shock to see unrequited love onscreen. The people wanted to see chemistry between the two leading pair, the love between two lost souls, a beautiful story unfolding, but instead SLB intended on to show a very sad concept of fighting your pains and sadness at the end, which left the audience numb they didn't understand the purpose of the movie, they couldn't deal with an unreal world, and they couldn't deal with a screenplay and storyline that had nothing to offer but just pain for the main lead who was madly in love with a girl called Sakina. People also didn't understand the fact that how come the story is real but the town is unreal! People found it difficult this time to see SLB's vision! And SLB failed as a director to show what the audience is hungry for! It's true that films are not about masala, but the films are also not about showing films that only you'll understand, the film that you'll only enjoy, SLB's journey with blue and black shades left the aam junta with ghum, he failed to show a love story that showed passion, pain, fun moments, confessing moments, love moments, friendship moments, instead he showed pain, fury, unethical places, which the audience couldn't digest! He could've made a story about unrequited love but with a better screenplay, with better sense of the world he is creating, with better sense of what his audience wants, with the better sense of editing and making not only his frames full of blue landscapes but some passionate, romantic and touching scenes between the duo, no wonder the film left everyone numb!

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER----------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------

very interesting views, I must say! But for me Saawariya worked absolutely well! I LOVED it immensely. But you ARE right when you say that there should have been more of a spark between the leads! It was Ranbir's film through and through... that is obvious, and I found Sakina very wishy washy...
Also, I think Sonam couldn't meet my expectations, although it IS true that her role didn't offer HER much scope as an actor. Still, it's only her debut, so THUMBS UP to both Sonam and Ranbir!
Also, you are right in the sense that I too found it a little 'off' so to say, to see a guy pursuing a girl so determinedly, and that she should not even hold a wee bit of place for him in her heart... he did so much for her, and yet I don't remember her even explicitly saying so much as a 'thankyou for all that you've done'.

I loved Sawariya .. It was amazing and a very new approach to film making. Who says that all movies has to stick to formula ? Satyajeet Ray one of the best movie makers we had never did a single formula film. Nor did any other maestro like Bimal Roy or guru Dutt. I think Sawariya had an amazing story to tell. Loved the movie .. An intelligent movie after a very long time ..

It was an okay movie! Not something that I'd jump out of my seats for but it wasn't as bad as people made it out to be! Though you can tell the actors are still new, they still have few acting skills still need a little bit work!
Though, Sakina's character annoyed me. She was always giggling in a odd manner and the fact that she used Ranbir the whole time without any gratitude towards him, just got me even more annoyed with her!
Still, a good movie, not SLB's best but still good enough!
