Take that, copycat!

Unlike director Bhansali, Sony Pictures wants it known that Saawariya is inspired by White Nights

Inspiration: A still from Le Notti Bianche

It's no secret that David Dhawan's Partner which released in July was the copy of the English film Hitch. At the time, the producers — Sony Pictures — contemplated action against the makers of Partner for making a blatant copy of their film without giving due credit.

But the controversy soon died out in a few days. For reasons best known to the officials at Sony Pictures, they did not initiate any action against the copy cats.

In a fix

But now Sony Pictures is in a fix. It's got something to do with their first Hindi production Saawariya! The film, based on Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky's short story White Nights published in 1948.

The same story was later adapted into a famous Italian film Le Notti Bianche, by acclaimed director Luchino Visconti in 1957, and remade again into a French film Four Nights of a Dreamer. Sony Pictures wanted to put a line on the posters saying that it is inspired by the original.

The production house didn't want to come across as a hypocrite, considering the noise they'd made over Partner. But their suggestion didn't go down very well with the director.

Inspired: A still from Saawariya

'I'm not liable!'

Says an insider, "Sanjay was not very keen on putting the tag on the posters, he feels it's his baby and didn't want to share his creative credit with anyone." The other reason for Sanjay's hesitation could be as he feels the short story came out well over 50 years and he is not liable to put that tag.

After a lot of deliberation on the part of Sony Pictures, Sanjay has finally agreed to put the line in the starting credit of the film. He refused to let them say anything on the posters.

An source from Sony Pictures confirms, "Yes, the film Saawariya is based on the short story White Nights and although the posters of the film don't say it, I think we've mentioned that it's inspired by White Nights in the credits of the film. Meanwhile, they thought he could place the tag on the posters of the film saying 'based on a short story White Nights.'

SLB never stops copying other stories. 😆 He acts like he came up with the whole story.

When I watched the old american movie that was later copied into Black, I was shocked because the two movie are exactly alike.

Anyways, there are a lot of copy caters

I agree with that point of SLB . For a copycat he's a little too much .
