A t her Bandra office, she's boiling her bheja over production accounts. "No financial irregularities!" she warns the glassy-eyed assistant. Meanwhile, I'm ready with kaagaz-'n'-kalam to record her respons- es on a gamut of subjects, which she fires off at rat-a-tat speed: Most of your father Mahesh Bhatt's cinema is sourced from his life. You don't seem to go down that route at all. It seems your new film as a director almost foresaw the Glasgow bomb attack. Right? (Severely) Please, let's not trivialise the issue. It's a sensitive topic. Dhokha, in a way, is my return to the roots.. to films like Zakhm and Tamanna. In India and even abroad, today Muslims are looked upon suspiciously . They are seen as either gang- sters and terrorists or on the other end of the spectrum, as extreme- ly scholarly and knowledgeable persons. There's a tendency to gen- eralise their voices at one or the other end of the extreme. There's no moderate voice. Dhokha offers that moderate perspective. Is it pro-minority? It is pro-life. There's a look at both the sides of the issue.. it would be very irresponsible for me to offer a lopsided version. The fact is that terrorism isn't a solution to any problem. We realised the gravity of global terrorism when the trail of the failed U K attacks led to our own backyard (in Bangalore). Why haven't you looked at the issue in a politically and communally volatile town like Malegaon or in a Kashmir hamlet? The story demanded that the milieu should be in a city which is , a seat of power. It could only have been Delhi or Mumbai. It's stale news now that you slapped your lead actor, Muzammil Ibrahim, for procrastinating over a scene. Would you ever work with him again? Get this straight. I didn't slap him.. I smacked him.. so that he never dares to mistreat a woman ever again. And no, I'll never work with him again.. even if Dhokha wins an Oscar. Most critics believe that you are a better actress than a director. (Pleased) Yeah? I'm glad if they say that about my acting. With Dhokha, I have nothing to lose. I can break all the rules. So far, you would have detected a bit of my personality in all my films. The very fact that I could do that has been a triumph of sorts for me. After Jism, I was offered Rs 1.20 crore for a Rs 70 lakh territory The . trade probably thought with a title like Paap, I was making Jism 2. I'd knowingly fallen into a trap. Then came Holiday which has been described as the biggest flop of my career. Still I can say with a certain amount of pride that it set a standard for dancing which no other film has. For a while in the 1990s, your father borrowed heavily from Hollywood films. Today, he remakes his own films. Woh Lamhe was a pot pourri of Arth and Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayi. Isn't that strange? When Raj Kapoor and Nargis did Chori Chori, no one could detect that it was sourced from It Happened One Night. So why was there a hue and cry when we made Dil Hai ki Maanta Nahin? As for Woh Lamhe, I haven't produced that film. You should ask my uncle (Mukesh Bhatt) and dad about it. Just the way I can't take any credit for hits like Ghulam and Raaz, I can't talk about the where Woh Lamhe came from and why . Although Mahesh Bhatt is a respected filmmaker, at times his media quotes on everything from the potholes on the city's roads to the condition of stray dogs, do become irritating. Has he ever spoken about potholes and dogs? I don't think so. Sure, he has his opinions but then, why do journalists call him? Er, don't blame me. I never call him for quotes. I'm not blaming you, I'm talking in general. Why don't journalists call Mr Amitabh Bachchan and get his opinions on every subject under the sun? Bhatt saab is accessible.. so he's subjected to this kind of media harangue. He has strong opinions which hurt at times.. and he's never afraid of voicing them. Has there ever been a clash of opinions between him and you? Of course, I publicly expressed my concerns about his decision to release the Parveen Babi tapes. Madhuri Dixit is back. Sridevi is expected to return. Have you ever contemplated a comeback to acting. I somehow don't like the word 'comeback'. I haven't gone anywhere, so I can't possibly make a comeback. From 1997 onwards, I have produced nine films, directed three.. three has been no time to focus on anything else. I'd love to act. But I want to do a role which suits my age. I can't be running around trees or whatev- er they are running around nowadays. If I were cast with let's say, Kangana Ranaut, I'd like to play her elder sister. How do you look back on your failed relationships with Bobby Deol, Sohail Khan and Ranvir Shorey? Oh, I did meet Bobby and Sohail at Dino's place during the making of Holiday. They are very well- behaved and respectful.. even Aly (Khan) is very cordial. For me, they are pleasant memories. After meeting Munna, I realised I love him the most.. I realised that I've never ever loved anyone else the way I love him. My only unpleasant relation- ship was the last one.. before my marriage. The public spat that followed was utterly avoidable. I don't want to name the person and give him any importance. He's in a relationship right now,I have to be respectful of the woman in his life. shaikh.ayaz@hindustantimes.com

WHAT Bling launch WHERE WHO Vijay Mallya, Sushmita Sen, Kabir and Pooja Bedi, Riya and Raima Sen, Dino Morea.. J W Marriott, Juhu Atul Kasbekar held a party to announce the launch of his talent management company, Bling. Shilpa Shetty stuck around, literally, with Karan Johar. Kabir Bedi couldn't stop doing the jig with Sharon Prabhakar's 16-year-old daughter Shazhan. Vijay Mallya sneaked in only after 1 am. Sushmita Sen's man Friday Bunty Sachdeva was seen getting her drinks.. one after the other. On the other hand, Deepika Padukone's presence kept Nihar Pandya, also a friend of the host, miles away from the do. Way to go!

S he must have lost out on Umrao Jaan to Aishwarya Rai.. but she's not giving it up yet. I'm talking about Priyanka Chopra, who was first signed to play the title role in J P Dutta's movie based on the courtesan. Seems, she's still so enthusiastic about the role that she did a photo-session in the avatar of Umrao Jaan.. for a magazine's special issue on tinsel town. I'm also told that apna Karan Johar is the guest editor of the mag that will be out come next month. By the way, I've just got a sandesh on my kaaliberry saying that Abhishek Bachchan has also done a shoot for the same mag.. and guess what! As Don.. not the Shah Rukh Khan version.. but the original 1970s film of Papa Bachchan. Oh dear dear.. film jaaye par role na jaaye. Huh?

GAUTAM RAJADHYAKSHA Beginnings I used to head the photo department of Lintas. My first published pic- ture was of Shyam Benegal. I also shot Tina Munim and other models. Disastrous shoot A jewellery campaign for Estelle, I shot Shyamolee Varma in 14 different changes.. but of there was a technical problem with 16 of the 19 rolls. I almost had a heart attack but Micky Contractor told me we had good pictures in the rest of the rolls. Most memorable photo Difficult to pick.. I've shot over 4000 faces in 30 years. But I've received compliments for my phots of J R D Tata, Dhirubhai Ambani, General Sam Maneckshaw, Rekha, Amitabh Bachchan, Kajol, Madhuri Dixit, and Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle shot together. I also remember very fondly the film publicity shoots for Diwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Urmila Matondar in Jaisalmer for Rangeela. Downside of the profession Awkward hours, you have to live with the camera as if it's your wife or mistress morning, noon and night. Unforgettable When things go wrong but the photographs turn out right. Difficult shoot None recently, thank the lord. Favourite subject For body language.. Mehr Jessia, Anna Bredmeyer, Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan. Among musicians, Amjad Ali Khan, Ravi Shankar. Among beauties, Nutan was the most perfect, Madhuri Dixit came a close second. Digital or print? With digitial, you can see the results immediately. In film processing, you're always on ten- terhooks till you get the results. Digital is also a fabulous means of storing images. Lifestyle I don't need to be a photographer to maintain my lifestyle, it came with my culture and family back- ground. How do you look in front of the camera? Terrible. Life after photography? I write screenplays.. right now, it's a Marathi film with Ashok Saraf and Sonali Kulkarni directed by Sanjay Sarkar. RAKESH SHRESTHA Beginnings Neetu Singh. It was difficult to get, but once we began shooting, it went very smoothly. She's very unaffected and pleasant which made the shoot even better. Disastrous shoot Fortunately none, so far. Most memorable photo Shooting Sridevi for Chandni. The wall in Rishi Kapoor's house is full of her photos.. I shot those featuring her in different moods. Downside of the profession You have to make time for the family My wife doesn't like me . socialising with the heroines. Unforgettable A shoot with Rekha. I don't work on a Sunday but she said that she felt she was at her best. I didn't have any assistants or helpers but the results were awesome. Favourite subject I'll have to skip this one. Difficult shoot With Shah Rukh Khan in dif- ferent looks with a blood tooth, freckles and Afro-hair. It was for the cover of Star & Style magazine. Digital or print? I was the first photographer to go digital.. initially it was tough, and I would have arguments with various art directors in var- ious publications. Lifestyle The money is good. I lead a nor- mal lifestyle. I don't even have a website of my own. How do you look in front of the camera? I'm better behind the camera. Life after photography Blank blank blank. How can you even ask me something so stupid? I don't know anything besides photography . DABBOO RATNANI Beginnings Sanjay Dutt's photo for Aatish. Disastrous shoot I was shooting the cricket team, I had set up two lights beforehand. It was close to dusk, one of my lights gave out. I was tense, I had ten minutes with no equipment to improvise. Most memorable photo A picture of Perizad Zorabian.. I was shooting for my calendar and my dog Flash walked in, so we to included him in the shoot. Downside of the profession The job is not as glamorous as it's made out to be.. there's more to it than clicking a button. Unforgettable When a lab messed up.. I couldn't salvage any of my photographs. Difficult shoot None this year, ha ha. Favourite subject Pooja Bhatt. Digital or print? Digital helps me to have more control over my photos. Lifestyle I am satisfied with what I get, I am doing something I love. How do you look in front of the camera? I was a huge, fat child, I had to act for an ice-cream commercial.. so I know what it is like to be at the other end of the camera. Life after photography It will be related to the showbiz. (Compiled by Hiren Kotwani and Mehjabeen Jagmag)

She said, "Everyone of you have contributed to the Indian pride. You are the true children of India." Kitu Gidwani and Sandip Soparkar did the sal- sa thing. Rashmi Uday Singh and Durga Chu- lani were the showstoppers for the final round.. they looked cool and confident. WHAT Hair styling show..
