Dutt's ancestral village prays, sympathises with him

Mandoli (Haryana): Disappointment engulfed this non-descript ancestral village Mandoli of actor Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt after a Mumbai court sentenced him to six years rigorous imprisonment for illegal possession of arms in 1193 Mumbai blasts case.

Eight kilometre from Yamunanagar, the Mandoli village falling on the Yamunanagar-Shaharanpur road was eagerly awaiting for the TADA court verdict in Mumbai.

While several villagers remained glued to their television sets to get the latest on Dutt, others preferred to offer prayers in temple and at their houses for a verdict in favour of their 'hero'.

Saint of Radhakrishan Temple, Ramanand, said: "We offered prayers since morning for a lenient view by the judge against Dutt. However, it was unfortunate that Dutt got the punishment." He said he was confident that the actor might get some relief from the Supreme Court.

"I was shell-shocked," former village head Satnam Singh said while reacting to the court order. "It is a very unfortunate moment for all of us," he said. However, most of villagers could not recall when they last saw Dutt in the village.

Some, however, said Sanjay, along with his other family members, was in his ancestral village after the death of his father Sunil Dutt a few years back.

Village head Amar Singh, who was visibly upset over the court order, however, said: "None is above law."

"We accept the court order... but the entire village is with Dutt in this hour of crisis," he said. Mandoli has a population of about 1700, he said, adding the entire village sympathises with Dutt.

In Chandigarh, Bollywood starlet Monica Bedi, recently released from jail after being acquitted in a passport forgery case, sympathised with Dutt and said she was confident he would get justice from the Supreme Court.

Bedi, who is spending her time at her ancestral village Chhabewal in Hoshiarpur district of Punjab, said Dutt's punishment would be a 'big loss' for Bollywood. "I'm confident Dutt will get justice from the Supreme Court," she added.

Efforts to be made to enable Dutt get relief: Dasmunsi

New Delhi, July. 31 (PTI): Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunsi today said all efforts should be made to enable actor Sanjay Dutt, who was given a six-year jail term in the 1993 serial blasts case, get "relief" from the highest judiciary.

Arthur jail to house Sanjay Dutt

Arthur Road Jail is Mumbai's highest security prison with 22 barracks meant to house 800 undertrials. But currently it's home to 3000 inmates.

Among them are the who's who of the Mumbai underworld.
Dawood's brother Iqbal Kaskar, key aides Ejas Pathan, Saleem Shaikh and Ehtesham Haji.

The Chhota Rajan gang represented by DK Rao, Saji Joseph and Vineet Yadav.

Also Ashwin Naik, notorious for instigating gang wars inside prison.
All of them are either held in a separate barrack or in the dreaded unda cell.

The cell is an isolation cell shaped like an egg, meant for terrorists and hardcore criminals, where Sanjay Dutt was kept briefly during his 18-month prison stint.

If he is convicted by the TADA court, Dutt will go back not to the unda cell, but to the barrack next to the court.

It's a barrack where all those who have been held guilty or are awaiting verdict in the 1993 blasts case are being held.

Before Judge Kode began delivering his order, the barrack already had 30 blast accused. Since then, 60 more have been added. This is where Dutt will go if he is convicted.

Sister Priya ask Sanjay to be strong

Mumbai, July 31: "Bhiaya, be strong", Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt was told by his sister-MP Priya as the actor bid an emotional farewell to his relatives in the Arthur Jail here after being sentenced to six years in jail in 1993 Mumbai blasts case.

Priya, Sanjay's elder sister Namrata and brothers-in-law Owen Roncon and Kumar Gaurav were among those who bid farewell to Dutt before he entered the high security jail in Central Mumbai.

The film star waved and blew kisses to his family members for some distance after passing them.

"Bhaiyya, be strong," Priya told Dutt before he entered the prison.

Dutt was sentenced for the illegal possession of an AK-56 rifle and a pistol.

The Special TADA Court rejected Dutt's appeal to surrender later and directed that he be taken to the prison where he is to be kept in a separate cell. (Agencies)

Dutt shocked by prison term

It was not the sentence Sanjay Dutt expected when he walked into the special court hearing the Mumbai 1993 blasts case.
Wearing a white checked shirt and blue jeans, he arrived with friends - including Bollywood director Sanjay Gupta.

In court he seemed a little nervous but relaxed as he went about shaking hands and hugging people who wished him well.

He was smiling and talking to all the people he recognised, including this correspondent, to whom he said: "We must listen to [Pink] Floyd together at some point."

This was a reference to a conversation he had had a couple of weeks ago with some journalists, including me, about how he enjoyed listening to rock groups.

Plea

When Judge P D Kode announced his decision of denying the actor's probation plea and sentencing him to six years in jail, there was shock on the actor's face.

Announcing the sentence, Judge Kode said: "Laws of the nation must be respected. If you don't respect laws then you can't be called a moral person."

More than 250 were killed in the blasts

He said that although Dutt could not be linked to the bombings, he should be jailed for buying firearms from the bombers.

The actor's face turned red. He seemed to be holding back tears as he heard the sentence.

Soon after, Dutt pleaded for more time with his loved ones.

He said: "Your Honour, I am requesting you to let me speak to family, my sister is pregnant... I thought I would get probation that's why I am not prepared, give me time to wind things up."

The judge however denied the request saying he could not do so legally.

The actor then asked the judge to let him speak to his daughter who is studying in New York - a request the court granted.

Dutt was in constant talks with his lawyers and seemed to discuss the next course of action.

He will be taken to Arthur Road jail in Mumbai where he will be kept until 2 August.

'Strong man'

The defence says it will launch an appeal in the Supreme Court.

"We think that the judgement is harsh," defence lawyer Satish Maneshinde told reporters.

He isn't a criminal - what was the need to give him six years?

Dutt fan

"Sanjay Dutt is a strong man, he has bounced back every time from a crisis. This is one of those crises. Millions of fans and family members are praying for him."

Mr Maneshinde also said film producers and directors are standing by the actor and have not asked for refunds.

Millions of rupees are riding on the actor at the moment as at least two projects are still in production and nowhere near completion.

Film director and close friend Bunty Walia told the BBC he was "saddened" by the verdict.

He said: "As for his ongoing projects, I think he will be given bail by the Supreme Court and most of the producers will wait until he is out of jail."

Many of his fans standing outside court were also shocked by the sentence.

"He is a good guy, he should have been sentenced but not for six years. I think that was too harsh," said one.

Another fan said: "I agree he has wronged and therefore should be punished but he isn't a criminal. What was the need to give him six years? He has already done almost two years in jail, another year should have sufficed."

Rs 100 cr riding on Sanjay Dutt

MUMBAI: Many in the film industry will be praying for Sanjay Dutt when the actor goes to the special Tada court on Tuesday.

Three films starring Dutt — Abbas-Mustan's 'Mr Fraud', Sanjay Gupta's 'Alibaug' and Sanjay Gadhvi's 'Kidnap' — are now on the floor. The producers of the three films together stand to lose around Rs 100 crore if there is any problem with their shooting.

Besides, Dutt also has two releases — ' Mehbooba ' and Indra Kumar's ' Dhamaal ' — this year. ' Dhamaal ' is slated to be released on September 7 and ' Mehbooba ' will hit the silver screen during Diwali.

' Dhamaal ' is a comedy and, after the success of ' Munnabhai ', there are many who are betting on the movie to make good money. ''It is a comedy of the same genre and has a good supporting cast that includes Arshad Warsi,'' a trade insider informed.

' Mehbooba ' has been in the making for seven years now and is said to be complete. It also stars Ajay Devgan and is an expensive film, costing around Rs 30 crore.

But the other three films on the floor are not anywhere near completion. The shooting of 'Mr Fraud' has been on hold for some time as the producers are finding it difficult to get dates together from all the actors and the directors.

An insider in Ashtavinayak (which is producing the film) said: ''Abbas-Mustan got busy with other projects, like 'Race', because of which the shooting of 'Mr Fraud' suffered. About 50% shooting of the film is complete.''

Dutt has also completed 60% shooting of ' Kidnap ' and is currently shooting for home production ' Alibaug '. ''But only 15% of the shooting of ' Alibaug ' is complete,'' a unit member informed. Dutt last shot for the film on Friday. It is learnt that 'Kidnap' and 'Mr Fraud' are being shot at a budget of Rs 35 crore to 40 crore each.

But Dutt is trying to ensure that his producers do not lose money because of his legal problems. ''He hasn't shot for another film, his home production (' Beehad '), because of the case,'' a unit member said.

Director Bunty Luthria said: ''Sanjay Dutt is making this film in the memory of his father and wants everything to be in place before he starts the production. We have just completed the script of the film and will begin as soon as the dates of the other films are finalised.''

"Sanjay Dutt is a great professional" - Indra Kumar

By Faridoon Shahryar, August 7, 2007 - 14:22 IST

"I think you have to be a great professional for in spite of being under so much of stress, Sanju still came and worked on the sets," says Indra Kumar, director of Dhamaal, one of the Sanjay Dutt movies that is complete and ready for release. If you recall, after being acquitted by the TADA court for terrorism charges seven months ago, Dutt resumed work on Dhamaal within a day of the court's judgment and it will be the first movie that will release after he was sentenced for a six year rigorous imprisonment under Arms Acts recently.

"My film was a comedy and it was all the more difficult because the kind of pressure he was under, it's hard to do comedy scenes as somewhere in the back of the mind the danger is lurking. I am really grateful to him and also have great admiration for him. I'm grateful he completed the film and not only completed but he did a great job. You'll agree when you'll see the film," Kumar added.

Dhamaal is a comedy about four men Arshad Warsi, Jaaved Jaffery, Ritesh Deshmukh and Ashish Chaudhry and their encounters with inspector played by Sanjay Dutt. The music is by Adnan Sami and the film releases on September 7th. Indra Kumar's last film Pyaare Mohan didn't hit the bull's eye. Will Dhamaal, a 2 hour 12 minute film, bring him back in the big league? The question shall be answered soon….
