Finally Lara did it!
If a certain bunch of trade pundits are to be believed, Priyanka Chopra and Abhishek Bachchan make a good pair on screen (notwithstanding the fact that favourite pairs do keep changing with time). The buzz is that even Aditya Chopra was keen to rope the pair for Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. Unfortunately, Priyanka was in knee-deep work with Love Story 2050, God Tussi Great Ho and Drona and eventually, had to turn down the film. Our sources tell us that Aditya Chopra and director Shaad Ali were almost heart-broken when Priyanka couldn't do Jhoom…. This is when they started hunting for a new leading lady.
When quizzed about it, Yash Raj Films' spokesperson says that Priyanka was not really considered for the film, and they had initially considered casting Vidya Balan with Abhishek. Vidya had also immediately agreed to do the film after the first narration. She was so excited about being cast in Jhoom… that she had turned down a couple of other film offers then. However, things went awry when she realised that she has two left feet and working in Jhoom… would have required her to boogie to several filmy tunes as the plot has lots of hip-shaking acts. That's when she chickened out and eventually, begged out of the project."
The spokesperson of Yash Raj Films says, "We had approached Vidya Balan and she had almost agreed to do the film. But the film has lots of dance sequences and this is when she opted out of the film. She was not too comfortable with the dance sequences."
That's how the film went to Lara Dutta. The story goes that Shaad Ali had told her about the film. At that time Lara was tending to her critically ill parents in Bangalore. She only got back to Shaad after a week. Reportedly, Lara was very restless while she was waiting to give a go-ahead to Shaad as she didn't want to lose out on a Yash Raj film."
The spokesperson of the production house adds, "When Lara was approached for the film, both her parents were in the ICU. She had told Shaad that she will take about five days to get back. During this time she kept praying that she is not misconstrued as a pricey actress. Shaad did wait for her to get back and eventually, she bagged the film."
