Saw a few similar interviews of actors from the 80s. They were all very 'clear' with what they were doing or their views in general with the movies. Hence Smita's words don't come as a surprise. She was/is obviously right, but many (not all) in the industry were 'aware' of the same. That's why the space for people like her got created during that time, and there was a sense that some genuinely wanted such films to succeed.

She was indeed articulate and smart, yet dumb enough to get involved with a married man. Love can make people blind.

It's not just love but societal standards were different. As an actress many were not considered suitable for marriage or for true love. Place many yesteryear actors/actresses today and with the resources they would have had many would not make the same mistake.

Do you have any excerpts or interview clips that you would like to share? I can’t listen to any of the new BW crowd’s horrid interviews in atrocious accents.

Another IV of Smita where she talks about Asha Bhosle and Indian movie audience in general

https://youtu.be/bftddoWTSpE

This is the full IV

https://youtu.be/OliMdLF4PdA

Most older Actresses IVs can be considered good watch, the reason could be they spoke mostly in pleasant Hindi and their English was not as jarring even if it had an accent

But if you want IVs on the topic of feminism maybe you can search for Shabana Azmi's. But I can't stand her pretentious pontificating

Smita was feminist and ahead of her times. Also highly educated and well spoken. Had worked as news reader I guess, which is why her language was good.

She was wasted in commercial crap like Kasam Paida karne wale ki and Dance Dance or Namal Halal and AB Sr spoke how she would ask questions and hesitated to do illogical scenes and songs.

Betty, thank you for sharing more of Smita’s interviews.

As for Shabana Azmi, I cannot stand the woman. She’s the Priyanka Chopra of the 80s i.e. “Progressive” for optics. Complete fraud. I was under illusion for a long time though until the picture of that slum cake came out back in 2009 or 2010.
