I think I can seperate the two. It's an art form at the end of the day, it should be viewed subjectively
Yes, I am not interested in their personal lives, more interested in their art. As long as they are not convicted if done a crime, then yes I will never watch or listen to their work.
I lose interest in overhyped and popular actors/actresses, I dont know why 😆.
It depends.
Cheating is wrong but it doesn't bother me as much. I see it as a personal conflict for a couple. I don't have any moral conflict with cheaters. I thought the whole Ned Fulmer thing was wild.
I see sexual assault and harassment as far more serious and problematic. Not only is it wrong, but it is also illegal and abhorrent. So I have a strong desire to reject those folks.
It also depends on what I feel about the art/content. I have always found Sajid Khan total trash. I have no qualms about refusing to watch any more content by him. But even though I find Bill Cosby even more trash than Sajid Khan, I still enjoy the Cosby show. It has so much nostalgia that I make up excuses that the show is more than Cosby and I can enjoy it despite him.
Similarly, because my views are more left-leaning, I find it easy to dismiss right-leaning folks. Vivek and Akshay are easy to dismiss because I find them untalented. But Anupam Kher is a talented actor and there are so many movies of his I like, that I tend to overlook.
Likewise, Harry Potter is so cherished and treasured to me that when JKR started saying allegedly transphobic things - I was more curious than angry. I was like - why is this person whom I have admired and appreciated saying these things that are so violent and hurtful to people in my social sphere? And I feel she is misunderstood - but Idk if it's my bias or a more logical conclusion.
I am working to cultivate curiosity even for people whose ideologies I disagree with to begin with. It's a struggle.
Ultimately, we're all human. We do our best to have principles and beliefs and stick to them. But its just as easy for us to falter and veer into hypocrisy.
It depends I guess on the nature and extent of accusation or the crime, but to simply put it no I can’t separate them. Like I can’t listen to Michael Jackson anymore without thinking about those boys from leaving neverland movie ☹️
Also Armie Hammer have ruined movies like call me by your name and man from uncle for me, I can’t simply watch it anymore 😡
Depends on kind of celeb and their level of talent or content of their work.
I must admit I still watch old films of Amitabh like Deewar despite being aware of his misogyny, role in 1984, Bofors, Panama papers etc. Though I watch it with less fascination compared to what I did when I was a kid and totally adored his films. I still admire his passion for his work and how he manages his image or is active even at this age and reinvents self with time. Something about his aura and talent or journey is such that I cannot entirely avoid him even though I have not seen his work post Black in films.
I feel same difficulty in watching work of Hema and Rekha despite knowing their attitude or social or political gaffes of Hema or Rekha's weird obsession with AB sr. I have reduced fascination for them but do not entirely avoid their old iconic films.
I have stopped watching Aamir's work after Dangal tbh. Avoided his post 3 Idiots work too such as D3, TOH, Secret Superstar, PK and liked Talaash only mildly. I did not like SMJ because I saw it as image building exercise. I do not like Aamir acting preachy after his real life issues.
However, I do think if artiste is already less likeable or not as charismatic, as say, Kangana then it is easier to stop watching them or their ads or paying attention to them at all. I give a damn about Kangana, Anupam, Mukesh Khanna now. I am weary of Swara, Richa, Pooja Bhatt, Gauhar Khan, Javed, Shabana, Farhan too. I cannot stand K Jo and Simi Garewal. I especially hate Simi for defending Rajiv Gandhi over 1984. IDGAF about her show or old films.
I stopped watching Salman films after HSSH. Dabangg is the only one I watched and that too due to hype. I have no fondness for him after those assault issues. IDGAF about Sanjay Dutt except Munnabhai series and Khalnayak.
I think it depends on aura or popularity of artiste too, how much you are able to disconnect from them, or how much you know of their real life issues, how much you read in news or how much you saw live (for eg, actions of Sanjay Dutt and Salman were really there for anyone to see), how iconic they are or what other traits they have or how they manage their image.
I have noticed misogyny in films and interviews of Rajinikanth a lot. Also heard he had affairs with female co stars when he was young. But I watch his certain films selectively. If not all films.
I stopped bothering about Rishi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna after knowing about attitude issues and philandering ways. I have lost respect for Sridevi after knowing her personal life. But somehow could not stop revisiting her own films. So you see difference in ability to detach from a really iconic star.
I do detest Rajesh Khanna also after knowing about his philandering ways, domestic violence and going after underage girls. I did stop watching his films and did not like him much earlier either.
I cannot stand Naseer at all either now. But somehow watch his old films at times where he did do good work.
It is hard to detach artiste and art. But if you know what they did then you do begin to lose interest in their work. And if they are less iconic or belong to distant era, then even easier to detach from them.
The "Funny Girl" casting controversy is an interesting study of art and artist.
Beanie Feldstein is a talented actress and a wonderful human being. Her performances have been appreciated and people find her professional and easy going. So many fans rooted for her when she was cast in the Funny Girl revival. Unfortunately, she is a mediocre singer and could not to justice to the role of a beloved broadway diva.
Leah Michelle, on the other hand, is a godawful human being. She is a self-obsessed diva who wants the spotlight on her. She is exceptionally mean, dismissive, and bullying toward those she deems less than her. People find her difficult to work with. But boy what she doesn't have in personality she makes up in talent. She is perhaps the best broadway belter since Idina Menzel. And Glee viewers will reluctantly admit - she is Funny Girl.
Initially, Broadway cast Beanie was socially correct and did not give the limelight to Leah Michelle. But they had to eventually fire Beanie and recast the role to Leah Michele who has got rave reviews.
It never made sense not to cast Leah. But if Leah was a serial sexual assaulted and abuser, everyone would agree better to cast Beanie rather than her.
Not when it's the actor. Others, depends on the crime.
I can't watch Cosby or Spacey or Kangana on screen.
Not going to ever watch a Polanski movie.
I could easily read an Anne Perry novel though.
