I don't think divorce would be a sufficient reason for the audience to reject a film, especially if the spouse isn't even a well-known person.

Why would people cancel Aamir for a divorce in 21st century while Amitabh had a messy affair with Rekha in the 1970s yet was hailed as a superstar.

Well kamal Hassan has a similar messy private life but vikram succeeded

A good film will surmount everything

But yes some actors have a clean image as family men which helps

Difference between other stars and Aamir is that other stars do not preach to others or act as mirror to society or voice of conscience the way Aamir does through his interviews, Satyamev Jayate or message based films. So they do not get labeled as hypocrites who preach to others while their own lives are in shambles.

Aamir has become like some self proclaimed social reformer in recent decades which invites brickbats. He also drops and picks causes at whim, never follows up. That makes even activists dislike him and view him as a pseudo intellectual who uses issues to promote current film or show only and drops everything like a hot potato once show or film is done away with.

Aamir has only himself, his poor PR, weak communication skills and bad choices to blame for his own bad image. Honestly a lot of his fansites shut down in recent decade or accounts of fans wound up online who used to defend him 24/7 on Twitter. They also seem to have moved on given his gaps, breaks, foot in mouth controversies and messy personal life, indefensible or underwhelming films which are hardly worth years of wait.

If you come after years you should give Lagaan or RDB or Thugs of Hindustan, Dhobighat or LSC? Though LSC is not as bad as Thugs. But still not worth that long wait either.

Amitabh is a wily man who managed his image the best despite serious cases like hate speech in 1984 and Bofors, Panama papers, Paradise papers, illegal land deals, affairs etc and fallout with brother Ajitabh.

His affair was forgiven as he remained married to Jaya and still does talk shows and public appearances at mandirs with family and is seen as family man. He avoids any mention of Rekha or Parveen etc. And makes Rekha look like one sided obsessed loony, who he is indifferent to.

His not getting divorced saved his image in eyes of public. He has managed his image best knowing conservative nature of Indian society.

He divorced her just to marry Fatima. It’s only about time when they get married, otherwise he would have never divorced Kiran & continued his affair with Fatima.

I agree, though Kamal actually preaches more,the politics of south are very different, kamal though there is no difference between what he preaches and practices as his atheist, non conforming and

actually another relevant example is Pawan Kalyan, he has a very turbulent and controversial life, 2 divorces, especially the second one made him quite unpopular because Renu (2nd wiife) has a great public image, he then married a russian and is also a politician

but the difference is they have rock hard fanatical fans who they have nurtured.

to some extent salman is the only one with a constant fan following among the khans, aamir's just doesnt have it anymore, and whoever was there left because of what you said

fans basically ensure openings irrespective of film quality

It was not his first divorce so don't see how it ruined his image. His acting in LSC was bad and that is the reason why his movie did not work that's the long and short of it. Nothing from the promo material struck a chord with the audiences so makers should really introspect and stop making lame excuses about image, boycott etc

That's the point. For first divorce you could say it's bad luck or incompatibility or any other excuse which doesn't put direct blame on Aamir. Second divorce means people are more likely to think there's something wrong with Aamir as a husband that all his wives leave his and none of his marriages work out.
