Why are you expecting everyone to be "versatile" like Sonu anyway? I don't think there is anything wrong with mastering your craft and playing your strengths. You don't have to be a jack of all trades to be recognized as a top notch singer if you are the best at what you do. Replace Kumar Sanu's voice with someone else's and the songs would totally lose their charm and appeal cuz much of it relied on his singing style too .... he has a truly gifted voice that takes on a life of its own with the right composition.
I would beg to differ take any duet of kumar sanu against be it with sonu nigam or udit narayan, abhijeet and the other outshined kumar sanu, be it sonu duet title song of jodi no 1, or be it udit's duet mohabbat dil ka sukoon hai, kumar sanu was overly nasal which sometime sounded irritating to ears, babul supriyo had a better tone he was kumar sanu without naselness, its just that kumar sanu got good tunes x could sounded equally good if not better with other singers too, considering the duets take any where kumar sanu was outshined by likes of udit or sonu, abhijeet with more crystal clear vocals
And to add abhijeet's rendition of tum dil ke dharkan and ankhoon me base ho tum also outshines kumar sanu rendition, and if u go to read music review section of 90s songs the review writers always disliked kumar sanu vocals because of heavily nasal and unnecessarly dragging voice from his nose,
all his contemporary had a better crystal clear voice except him be it sonu be it abhijeet be it udit be it vinod rathod, kumar sanu himself admit that he has been a nasal singer so far,
