Excellent review . It is exactly what I felt while watching the movie. Gehraaiyan title is so apt as it dealt with so many topics layered one beneath the other. I love movies which deals with complex human emotions or relationships. Even though beginning was slow paced, but I still found it very engaging to watch. It kept me curious how these four people will end up considering the mess now they are in . My most favorite scene was naseer and deepika's towards the end .

Watched the movie..still 50 minutes to go so haven't seen the twist yet.

Didn't understand though how Sid and DP fell for eachother so soon..no connect nothing.. just couple of meets n they r totally into eachother.

DP...still can understand ..she always resented the fact that her cousin had a good life and lavish lifestyle while she lost out on that..and she had a struggling BF while her cousin was engaged to a suave, rich businessman.

But what was the catch for Sid? What interested him so much as to risk his personal, professional life and whole reputation for this girl?

All over people are saying the movie deals with complex emotions which I totally disagree with. Actually this is the irony and the reason the makers had thought a portrayal like this will click with the millennials. Because we are a petty and an open ended generation. We don’t know what satisfies us. We just want to keep chasing because well that’s what brings the rush but as soon as we are faced with the mildest inconveniences, we make life altering decisions at a spur of the moment.

What’s complex in it when 99% of millenials are the same😂 Selfish, petty and chasing the unachievable. Its quite dumb for a 30 yo Alisha to believe her mom committed suicide because her dad made her move from Mumbai to Nasik. No reference was given to this story (Despite this being shown as a reason of major trauma for the protagonist) It was nowhere stated that Deepika’s mother was obsessed with money or property or she had any big dreams which she was devoid of by bringing her to Nasik. Hence within half an hour into the movie it was clear her mother had someone in Mumbai she loved and couldn’t live without. Supposedly righteous Deepika shouting on a rather slout Naseer was a dead giveaway the narrative is gonna take a 180 degree turn.

While I agree it is very easy for a kid to relate to a mother’s trauma and not to a father’s because father’s dont reveal their emotions but still moving from Mumbai to Nasik as a reason of suicide and basing a very smart woman’s entire anxiety on it made less sense to me and I found it to be a very loose plot point.

Its funny how when Naseer accepts in front of Deepika that yes her mom cheated him, she immediately removes all her allegations on him and feels sorry for mistreating him but she never feels sorry for her cousin like she feels for Naseer. She did the same to Ananya’s character what her mom did. Situational morality - Again a very not so complex and commonly found trait of millennials.

Siddhant’s character was anything but complex. Though people are at times caught up between right and wrong or may be two rights and two wrongs but he was clearly an opportunist and plain selfish. Went where he saw benefit.

Ananya and Dhairya didn’t have much to do they were just normal mediocre people caught in first world problems like mujhe kam nahin party karni hai and I have to plan my wedding type log.

My final review of the film would be that it made me feel very petty as a millennial . Funny how we totally change our moral compass even with the slightest of inconvenience. Funny how we give so much importance to ourselves that we are ok with any bullshit if someone chooses us. Funny how we always expect sympathy in the name of mental health and anxiety( Not trying to mock real mental health issues here) but i hate when first world problems are deemed as trauma or character traits. Deepika is shown like a girl who always expects things to be perfect or settled or in place. When her bf doesn’t have a job she has anxiety, when her studio closes she has anxiety. Basically she is a control freak and that somehow doesn’t relate to her mom’s death. No connection! Did she ever try to find out why exactly her mom committed suicide. Generally people who seek medication for mental illness also see therapist and the first line of treatment is talking the patient through his past life and then medicines come in picture. Deepika is only shown reflecting on her trauma as a kid. But she never tries to relate present with that trauma. She never tries to notice that her dad never mistreats her or that she can ask about her mom from her aunt or Ananya. Rather Ananya’s character is more self aware and trying to make the mends or reason out always.

This is just a wannabe movie which has jumbled up all the buzz words like suicide, anxiety, messed up, startup, investment, infidelity and definitely it buzzes with the audience. It’s actually a mirror that what a petty, weak and anxious generation are we. Not an iota to be proud of! Yup roz yacht pe ghumna is a first world problem and please dont make it a reason for mental trauma ki meri cousin ke paas hai mere paas nahin like are you serious?! Kaunse privileged world mein rehte hain aap?

This review makes me believe that many dont even know how anxiety feels like ? yes her boyfriend might lose job, her studio might get closed , there are more than enough reasons for a person suffering from General anxiety disorder . How can a normal person ever understand how anxious brain operates? What is normal for everyone looks like a mountain for an anxious person so by calling her control freak you are basically discrediting people who suffer from anxiety on day to day basis . And one has to be kidding to say that she should have known why her mom died or investigated .. she was a kid and merely thinking about the moment her mother died gives her PTSD and such ppl try to avoid thinking about it rather going on investigating about it .

Agreed. Really strange to call her a control freak for her anxiety? Her dad also ensured that she should never know the truth of her mom's past to protect her. Why would she start a parallel CID show to investigate her death? Weird criticism.

Gehraiyaan my perspective

The trailer and the promotions were misdirected and like many others I thought that this is a glorifying movie . But when you watch the film we realise that though it didn't preach us with moral values , it gives us glimpse of what happens if we fall for all temptation.

The protagonist is Alisha , a yoga instructor who is very cautious about her life because of the past . All her reaction to the issues in life is based on the major incident happened in her past. She and her partner Karen meets her super rich cousin Tia and Tia's fiance Zain. Tia ,Karen and Alisha grew up together but later their life styles becomes different because of the life choices of their parents. The affluent lifestyle of Tia further creates insecurities in Alisha's mind. Tia's fiance too have similar insecurities and perhaps that resulted in the instant attraction between Alisha and Zain. As the movie progresses, it shows the shallow relationships ,its impact on the people involved with few predictable plots and unpredictable twists.

Dhairya Karwa as Karen has comparitively less screen space but he did his part well. Ananya's Tia is the only character who is comparitively less selfish and she enacted her role really well. Sidhant's Zain was good but nothing extraordinary. To be honest after Gully boy I had high expectations on him.

Deepika's role was well written and that might be the reason she was the best thing in the movie. She nailed her part. Nasruddin Shah proved why he is one of the best actor in Indian cinema. There was one scene Alisha with her dialogue shows her emotional outburst and Nasruddin Shah just expresses his emotional turmoil with expression. Rajat Kapoor though not the role as per his calibre excels in the limited screen space.

This movie even the dialogues are mostly English , the very common F word is used in Hollywood movies is overly used here, after the initial chemistry between the leads ,just like their shallow relationships, the intimate scenes lacked chemistry .

Movie is meant for urban audience. If you like slice of life dramas or if you watch realistic Hollywood movies you will like it. This is not definitely a love story ,not purely a thriller genre but even our life is not thriller but if we look back we know that the life is not less than a thriller ride.

What I liked most.

Spoiler alert

The director didn't made an attempt to create sympathy for any of the lead characters. The viewers get an impression that though Zain and Alisha got instant connection due to their messed up relationship with parents and past ,we also get an impression that Alisha was tempted due to the wealthy , secure life of Zain . Even Zain is aware of this and that could be the reason he hid his financial crisis with Alisha. When Alisha shows up in the third anniversary of Zain and Tia with the big news, like Zain I felt that they finally got struck. When she disturbs Zain in office in the middle of important meeting I felt that both deserves this . Both are selfish people ,but Alisha compared to Zain is better, because, though for different reason she didn't spoil the life of Karen .Also her anxiety for future is somewhat relatable as she was of the impression that the ill-fated past is due to the financial problem so she gave undue importance to it. The only time her character seems to be not justifying her perception is her initial hesitance in getting rid of the pregnancy. I mean she wants to be secure ,so why would one with similar thought process will give a second thought? Zain , I guess never was in love with Tia . It was all about her role in his business ambition. He never showed interest in mending relationship with Tia's mother and was evidently irritated when she points out the favour Tia and his father done on his business. Having said that ,I guess he wasn't in love with Alisha as well ,it was physical attraction.

I am amazed that even after her redeemed version , I didn't feel any sympathy for Alisha . All I felt is like mother ,like daughter. And that's what I liked about this movie. It just shows the reality ,it is not an awareness program on anxiety disorders, suicide etc . Perhaps ,the only message we get is Karma is a bitch.

one thing I totally hate is how current generation are heavily criticized coz they cant handle problems like their older gen . First of all the living conditions , the exposure everything was so different couple of decades ago . Every generation has their own set of issues . we cannot undermine millennials or gen z coz we think they have it easy . the world is much more competitive now and the level of distraction which comes with internet and social media is altogether a different world which older gen wasnt subjected to . Also, now we have a whole gen growing in a pandemic era and they might even grow up having severe social anxiety compared to previous gen . If boomers life wasnt easy then the same applies for current gen too but ofc the factors are different .

Also anxiety and depression don’t need a trigger point. It’s like saying why is this guy with a successful career and everything practically served on a platter complaining about depression? Depression can also be completely a physical problem just like Cancer etc which doesn’t need anything to get triggered.
