I think once the virus is “vanished” it will be business as usual. And in these times producers are thankful for these ott platforms they can even sell there shittiest movie and you reach a bigger audiences some who you never would have reached other wise.
The people who have to deal with big losses are these cinemas…they get zero income. I hope they will be able to recover from this.
Experts are saying the next covid variant is going to much more lethal and infectious. Omicron was an evolutionary mistake and exception. So I don't think it's going to be ever normal again. Infact, things are going to go much worse.
It's really hard to say because we have a highly unpredictable external force (the pandemic) which has the power to shift and dictate growth and present barriers.
Your question has made me think of the mid-80s when Piracy was a BIG concern, watch this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhKr0glHqq8
It was a time when video players were becoming a mass-market commodity and unofficial VHS films were widely circulated. Film industries around the world were worried, and rightly so. Before this time, the only way to watch a film would be at the cinema, paying for a ticket. Now it was thought that cinema theatres were under threat because everyone will just sit at home and watch pirated films at home.
Similarly, in this era, with streaming services coupled with the pandemic, there is a new fear in town. It will be interesting to see what transpires from here.
I feel like there will be and in fact there currently is a crash and downslide of the power of a cinema house. That happened also in the very late 90s and booming mid-2000s era when internet file-sharing was at it's peak. We discussed it on this forum itself, that 2002 was apparently the worst year for business in Bollywood. I see a correlation there. But by the end of the 2000s, films like Ghajini, 3 Idiots, Om Shanti Om were breaking records and footfalls were sky-high once again.
I can see something like that happening again, but in quite a few years.
What perhaps needs to take place now is, the film industries around the world need to re-invent the cinematic experience wheel again. Advances in technologies has allowed 3D films to come in and save the day in terms of overall collections. And of course, things like surround sound and green screen and other Special Effects which are best viewed on a BIG SCREEN and pulled people away from their computers.
There will again be a certain few genres of films which will have Big Event Releases. Other films will go straight to streaming. I absolutely don't see cinema halls disappearing or closing down in large numbers at all.
My prediction: by the end of the decade, cinema will be BOOMING once again.
Masks, Sanitizers, Distancing for life 😎
..😭
big films have gained success on OTT, for example, Shershaah and Mimi
OTT is here to stay and eventually could surpass cinemas
