I think Trapped, Udaan and Lootera are masterpieces, and strangely enough, come from the same director Vikramaditya Motwane. They are so different from each other, yet each has his trademark authentic stamp upon them. Whilst Trapped is all about the crisis of modern-day society and the alienation which it fosters upon us, Udaan is a coming-of-age story which has the protagonist at the receiving end of an abusive father. Lootera is an exquisite look at love and redemption, with some magnificent performances by the leads. Ranveer and Sonakshi's love story is coated with the unfiletered sweetness of honey, and yet also tarnished with the toxic bitterness of betrayal.
Out of these three unique pieces of art, which movie do you like the most?
For me, it is difficult to choose, but I'll go with Lootera as it was like watching poetry in motion. Each and every character was depicted through the prism of authenticity, and the frames were drenched in sublime artistic splendour. At times, you forgot your own points of reference to reality and were carried away by the characters' back story and haunting range of emotions. The music just amplified the settings and the nuances of a finely-honed sensibility.
Second would be Udaan because it perfectly captures the adolescent predicament and the effects of abuse, but also holds out a strong ray of hope.
Trapped is an immensely original pice of work and I admire the creative cinematic language which fuels its ethos. Rajkumar Rao is the soul of the movie, and his performance is powerful and carries the premise of alienation to its most extreme outcome, relentlessly challenging our inbuilt notions of modernity.
