Self-defense is different from retaliation. Even the law wouldn't agree with retaliation - not in India, not in the U.S., not in most places. That is frontier justice.
In fact, the power differential is actually taken into account when writing some laws if I'm not mistaken. Like if a criminal hits a policeman, the cops can only apply restraint, not actually strike back.
Yeah, when nature/society gives some physical advantages, more restraint is also expected.
