Maybe it was intended as a friendly action but both the slapper and the slappee’s reaction afterwards didn’t look that way, they looked awkward, uncomfortable and her weird “your cheek was asking for it” save made it worse...

If anybody is interested, similar thing in another interview in TV. The guy playfully slaps the girl at 2:21 and everybody gets awkward.

That was not a slap, not a slap at all and the girl still reacted that way

but here Varun couldn’t do that, he had to grin and bear it

Jahnavi should not have slapped Varun. It was rude, disrespectful, and nowhere cute.

But Varun slapping back would've been worse because there are physical differences between men and women.

Thankfully, he had enough presence of mind.

Don't agree at all.....I am not talking about Varun hitting her so hard that it would have knocked the daylight out of her...I was talking about the same intensity of a slap which she used....it wouldn't have hurt her ...but still it would have been criticized and Varun would have been beaten black and blue.....for me its like.....don't poke me ....because if I turn out to be strong enough to break that finger...it will be your fault.....I do not care about men or women here...its like who started it......don't care who finished it...every body irrespective of their gender should have the right to retaliate.

Self-defense is different from retaliation. Even the law wouldn't agree with retaliation - not in India, not in the U.S., not in most places. That is frontier justice.

In fact, the power differential is actually taken into account when writing some laws if I'm not mistaken. Like if a criminal hits a policeman, the cops can only apply restraint, not actually strike back.

Yeah, when nature/society gives some physical advantages, more restraint is also expected.
