He always adapts to the genre and the medium of the films he is working in. Though he gets trashed a lot for overacting, perhaps that is the need of the commercial films he works in like Coolie and Judwaa 2?

I can't help thinking after seeing Badlapur and October, that there is a good actor hidden somewhere in him. It is difficult, for example, to believe that it is the same actor in October who underplayed every single nuance as opposed to the Varun we saw in Coolie who made overacting an art.

Quite agree - he can give good performances as shown in October and Badlapur. He was not great, but still decent in Kalank and Sui Dhaaga as well

I think he is purposefully choosing to do more of these outlandish, comedy capers like Coolie and Judwa and those Dance movies so he can get a strong mass / youngster following before he switches up to serious roles again

How do his upcoming projects look like ?

I know of only one movie of his - Bhediya, which is slotted for release in 2022. It's in the genre of horror-fantasy I think, and co-stars Kriti Sanon.

He's doing another with Sriram Raghavan. I have high hopes. Varun seems to be a director's pet, entirely changing his style to suit the director. He's carefully choosing a fine mix of the masala, dance and arty. Like a thali. There's something for everyone. Though I really don't know what he was doing signing up with Remo after the debacle of Race 3. His love for dance triumphed over his rational thinking, I guess.

Varun isn't a good actor.. Even in films like October and Badlapur you can see his limits.. He is definitely not as bad as he is made out to be though. The so called comedy movies he chose to do are just horrible, they are not funny and neither is his acting or comic timing is good to pull off a stupid script. In fact to be honest only Badlapur has been a decent performance by him..rest be it ABCD or Kalank or even Dulhaniya series he is pretty much below average. To me he reminds me too much of 90s Salman ( with slightly better acting talent and of course more likeable personality) and have a feeling he will choose Bhai's path to stardom.

He is at the most an average actor but unlike the other entitled colleagues of his, he comes across as a humble and likable actor and hence we as audience feel like giving him another chance. I personally found his acting in both the said Badlapur as well as in October as just above average and nothing to boast about - its like how a below average actor suddenly when gives an average performance, gets lifted to the skies. I have seen that happening with Sonam too in Neerja.

Also I think Varun doesn't get enough credit for what he does in his rom coms. Rom coms as a genre has little respect and there is no actor who can showcase great acting in rom com because the material just isn't there. I am thinking of all the great romantic movies of 90s, 2000s and 2010s. I can't think of a single movie where everyone went wah what great acting. Maybe Kareena in JWM and TWM2 Datto are the exceptions because those roles were truly unique for bollywood females. Vidya Balan, Kareena, Priyanka, Hrithik, Ranbir, Ranveer, Deepika all are less than their best selves in rom coms.

Despite all of that I think Varun is one of the better actors of this genre along with KRK and Ayushman
