Do OTT platforms lead to change in overall content landscape?

Just read this on Quora:

"Acc. to me, the launch of Netflix in India in 2016 was epochal in altering how we consume content. Now, along with easy access to internet and affordable smartphones, the entertainment market became dense with choices. With social media and streamers, viewers no longer were actively searching out for content. A library of content was suddenly made available to viewers around the clock, in small, digestible nuggets. Hindi films had to compete with not only other Hindi films, but content from across the world.

In the thick of this shift to mobile-first approach, content has also undergone a dramatic change. From experimenting with narrative techniques, to doing away with the classic song-and-dance for a more realistic ethos, filmmakers have taken genre-redefining risks, of which many borne the juiciest metaphorical fruit.

Films like Udaan, Masaan, Delhi Belly, The Lunchbox, Newton and A Death in the Gunj may not have been critically and commercially successful projects upon their release, but their availability on streaming platforms and continued conversation due to social media, has made sure that they be recognized now cemented as some of the best films to have come out of India."

There will be a significant expansion in content-driven cinema. Films that might have been otherwise obscure or unknown will get wide audiences.

However, commercial cinema will remain the same. In fact, content films will slowly disappear from the theatrical landscape.

No matter what is the in thing right now, the big screen experience has its place and will never go away. In fact more and more theaters are going to be opened trying to reach out to even the remote corners of the world. However, the offbeat cinema is slowly going to disappear from the screens and will become more of a personal viewing experience through the OTT platforms.

No.

Nobody even remembers the movies that debut directly on OTT platforms. They're automatically considered boring, arty or low budget. People assume it's not good enough to be on the big screen so it got dumped on streaming.

TV shows get more notice but even then it's only a few that do. Most go by without a lot of interest.

Do think she would have gotten so much recognition otherwise?

There is only so long before OTT platforms run out of investor money to make unwatchable content and buy niche movies.

The problem is that most of the indian content on OTT is trash . Infact the most succcessful are actually the softcore p*rn stuff like on Ullu, Balaji etc . Shows like Sacred games are once in a while and some average shows get hailed to the skies

OTT platforms will definitely help alot of talent who aren't suitable for mainstream work or those whom elitists don't consider good enough.

That being said, due to OTT platforms (the gud ones) having strong scripts and performances, mainstream cinema will have to up its game regarding quality. Basically go back to the Golden Ages in terms of quality of scripts, actors, directors, music teams etc.
