My take

Bulbbul Review :-

Bulbul the lastest Netflix film by Clean slate Films of Anushka Sharma is a cross-genre predictable film with a strong feminist statement. Starring Tripti Dimri as a lead protagonist, others playing mainly supporting part.

Based in 1881 at Bengal Presidency, The film starts with a child marriage of the lead character with a Jamindaar Indraneel(Rahul Bose) who is at least 30 years elder to her, In her ln Law`s house she finds a friend and confidant in Satya(Avinash Tiwary) her brother in law who is close to her age, There is a twin mentally challenged brother of her husband Mahendra and his wife Binodini(Paoli Dam). Bulbul grows up to be very fond of Satya(Secretly loving) who is sent to study in London When they were young. The main story starts with Satya returning to his village after 5 years and A witch is killing men around. How Satya finds out Who is the witch, What is her motive and What happened in these 5 years to all other characters is the storyline.

Anvita Dutt's first film as a director is a brave attempt to say something new and in totality it works for me. If you see the film you will realise how a female gaze differs from Male Gaze And She has made the scenes look like a painting.

Production Design by Meenal Agarwal is excellent and costume by Veera Kapur e is authentic, Cinematography by Siddharth Diwan is first-rate, Background music by Amit Trivedi is effective. All of them together have created a world which is eerie and mysterious especially use of red.

Avinash, Parambrata do not have much to do, Being a good actor they have played their respective roles well. Rahul Bose has two characters and both are played wonderfully by him. Paoli Dam is again another wonderful performance. Binodini`s mischief, her always trying to belong to someone, Her agony all are portrayed wonderfully by her and her eyes. But the star of the film is Tripti Dimri in the title role. She has many layers in her character and “Kya justice kiya chain”. In the later part of the film, She showed the grey side of the character as good as her innocent side.

Being a bong I could not help but see some classic reference of Literature here. Binodini (Both Widow)and Mahendra are taken from Chokher Bali, Get up of the characters are similar to Devdas. Like how Paro used to wait for Devdas, Here Bulbbul was waiting for Satya. Like "Noshtoneer" Charu and Amol here also the lead pair are Devar-Bhabi. These might not occur to all, But I felt these cant be overlooked by Bongs or who are aware of the literature or cinema of Bengal .

In short, it is a horror film, But Not the horror of a witch But the horror of men and how Women had been treated all these years and still now.

I just finished watching the movie. I found it beautiful, disturbing, and downright depressing.

I had to close my eyes and block my ears at some point because the scenes were too painful. My heart is still crying from the unfairness of it all. It’s one of those movies that stay with you 💔

This is such a sad movie... she was treated so unfairly. It made me cry. It was really well made and powerful. Loved it!

I just finished watching it.

The movie left me disturbed, anguished, and elated in equal measure. Disturbed and anguished because of what Tripti's character had to go through. Elated because the acting is absolutely SUPERB. Each and every one is just amazing👍🏼

Special mention to Rahul Bose -- he inspired so much hate in me, means he really pulled off his character with utmost ease!

Was eagerly waiting for this one since the trailer, bit disappointed with the supernatural part, since it is more about the social horrors .

The lead actress ,Tripti dimri carries the movie on her shoulders, her naivety as young bride and her transformation into the 'thakurani' was effortless. The colours and cinematography was beautiful , with the omnious tone but it could have been so much more in regards to the storyline and horror part.

Worth the watch for the performances and the way it beautifully unfolds on the screen.

It was an average movie, lacked both horror and thriller quotient. Infact most of the plot was quite predictable. Some of the characters were half-baked. Also, there was too much red for my liking. But the movie is beautifully shot. Almost every scene was like it came out of a painting.

The performances though were the highlight.

Tripti carried the whole movie on her shoulders, there wasn't a single scene where she might have missed the mark. Can you imagine any of the newbie 'A listers' giving such a performance?

There wasn't much to do for Avinash/Satya and thus I was a bit disappointed as I had high expectations after watching him in Laila Majnu. Same for the guy who played the Doctor. He too didn't have much to do. Both of them acted well but there wasn't much depth in their characters. Also, whoever styled Satya clearly didn't do him any favours😆

Special mention to Paoli Dam, the 'Chup Rehna' scene where the petty, wily, scheming bahu's compulsions are shown is just ⭐️

It sucked which is a bummer because it had real promise in parts, all the squandered potential.

Spoilers**

Till when are Indian writers going to rely on rape as a plot point? Rape revenge films are trash and it is 2020 for god's sake. This movie had an absolutely graphic and disgusting rape/violence scene, almost from an 80s misogynistic movie. Not only was the entire revenge aspect cliched and done to death, but also the way it was shot and stretched out seemed very problematic to me. Also all the violin melodramatic music, the ending was TERRIBLE. I was DONE!

This Tripti is alright, no screen presence and average actress. Was actually laughably poor in parts.

The scene stealer is Paoli Dam. Lovely delivery in the chup rehna scene. Was thinking how great she would have been as Kashibai, such a beauty too.

That rape scene was really painful to watch and reduced me to tears, jeez. I wish too that it wasn't graphic and that they just implied it instead.

Just finished watching it...

Bulbbul was dark and depressing. The horrors that she faced just for loving someone was unimaginable.

I loved tripti's acting. She was so GOOD. She was the only one that stood out. The different shades in her character were portrayed so well by her. And her voice is so nice too.

I felt like the supernatural element should have been explored a little more. The horror seemed a bit lacking. The story was pretty basic, but the superb acting by everyone elevated the subpar story.

There was this one comment that I read on YouTube which I thought was very fitting-

'Bulbuls story is a matter of perspective.

She was a goddess for the women and a chuddail for the men.'
