May be beauty standards were different then. Just like hairy men.
Girls probably were not expected to have a thin waist then. (Earlier "queens" like Hema Malini, Sridevi also did not have it. Compared to them Madhuri was slimmer). Karishma, Urmila were not considered beauty icons.
When models/beauty pageant participants became regular in Bollywood, India's beauty standards changed. (Female leads being tall and slim. Male leads with no chest hair).
Earlier generation had to adapt. Be it Anil Kapoor (a hairy man) or Madhuri (who reduced her waist). I don't see a big deal. I rather appreciate their adaptability.
