Deepika's transition from wooden to good actor?

At the start of her career she was called an under performer. But by and by she improved exceptionally well. Cocktail was the turning point in her career.

On Quora somebody wrote: "Indian cinema in general has the bad habit of sourcing actresses from the fashion industry. Models are not actors, period. If you tried to pitch a movie to 20th Century Fox or Universal with Kate Moss as the female lead, you'd be thrown out faster than you can say “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” (Google it if you don't get the reference). In our industries, all that matters is the physical appearance of the heroine, acting potential be damned. This is the reason nobody else in the world takes Bollywood seriously."

But i would say that despite being a model initially and being wooden in the first few years of her career, she improved drastically. I have not seen such a transition in any other actor/actress.

Chapaak just reinforces her acting potential. She disappeared into the character in a way which is the hallmark of a good actress.

Do you think her transformation is complete, or does she need to improve more?

Actually she was good in OSO.....and then kept on oscillating between bad and average with a couple of above average performances thrown in between....

Precisely. Movie choices and attitude also nosedived.

From performances like Piku & Tamasha, BO success like Piku & BM to XXX. From a professional high to dumbness galore.

You are asking IF to recognize anything good DP did is like asking a pig to fly.

Just look at how much praises she is getting for Chhapaak even Kangana fans on Twitter who hates her the most had to recognize her good work. India forum is extremely biased for a while So I am not expecting any praise or any neutral opinion here about the stars they don’t like. As I said before, this place was a place to share opinions but now we are trashing celebrities and their work just because we don’t like them.

Most people here haven’t taken the opportunity to watch Chhapaak, yet they have bathmouthed the performance left and right. How can you do that? IF is no longer the benchmark for me, I am happy to see the recognition she is getting elsewhere smiley20

why you did not mention Chhapaak which is her best performance till date? You are criticizing her choices like BM and XXX but those two weren’t the last movies of her

She is not the best actress. She has earned respect through making an impact with her characters, her beauty, and an overall star aura.

She was marvelous in cocktail. The actor came out with her there. Same with ram leela. That was her best time period. then Piku...

I will admit..the hype around her has died down a little due to emerging actors like alia, taapsee, now sara, etc..they are all doing good work and are making an impact. So it is natural for hype to die down, even more so when actresses age. Do I think any of the actresses match up to the combination of aura, talent, and beauty shown during her peak. No. She has set a high bar as a packaged star, and now every actress who is reaching the top position is always compared to her for a reason. Personally, I have trouble accepting the likes of Alia as a number 1 after her. but thats just my opinion.

I always found her wooden and a one-note actress, except for Cocktail where she seemed to be playing herself. In OSO, Farah mentioned she first had Deepika doing the waving scenes, all scenes without a dialogue, a few dancing scenes, tried making her do 1 dialogue and so on...She has a gorgeous smile, but that's about it.
