The real Ranchoddas Shamaldas Chanchad (Javed Jaffrey) and his family would be guilty of fraud. Phunsuk Wangdu (Aamir Khan) can claim 1) He was an orphan compelled to do the bidding of the family that took him in 2) He never got to claim the degree or the benefits he obtained.
Chatur has no ethical or leverage. Phunsuk Wangdu did not intend to defraud his friends or the college. He was an orphan doing what it takes to survive. Now that he is a self-made entrepreneur he would have no qualms admitting that the family where he worked made him obtain a fraudulent degree. All it would do is strip the real Rancho of his degree.
I never thought that the movie endorses fraud. It merely shed light on how those with money/power do defraud the system.
What it truly highlighted for me was
1) True intelligence is not in test scores or degrees but being able to apply one's skills and talents for growth and success
2) There are several genuinely gifted students who never make it through our education due to lack of funds/resources or an assessment structure that rewards memorization instead of practical applications. There are tons of folks in India who can wire circuits for an entire building, build simple machines, perform complex calculations without any formal education.
3) Education is not about topping the class and showing down others, but using the opportunity to collaborate, build community, and leverage each others ability to become better individuals intellectually and socially
