The message was that mugging up without understanding anything is not right. But the movie showed Chatur successful in his career which ended up contradicting the message.😆

I don't think the movie tried to say that Chatur's job was wrong. It just said that Chatur was person who saw academics as a competition rather than a source of knowledge, which was wrong.

The message of 3 Idiot wasn't that everybody should be Rancho, as neither Raju or Farhan became genuis as Rancho, rather that the educational system of the country has become a competition, when it shouldn't be one.

well Chatur like many muggers in real, have become successful in life.

But Chatur's competition were not the likes of Farhan and Rajus. Compared to them, yes he led an excellent and luxurious life.

But his competition was Rancho, and in the end Rancho became a much more successful than Chatur. Chatur may have gotten huge amount of money and career success, but despite all that, he was at the end of the day, another corporate cog.

The real Ranchoddas Shamaldas Chanchad (Javed Jaffrey) and his family would be guilty of fraud. Phunsuk Wangdu (Aamir Khan) can claim 1) He was an orphan compelled to do the bidding of the family that took him in 2) He never got to claim the degree or the benefits he obtained.

Chatur has no ethical or leverage. Phunsuk Wangdu did not intend to defraud his friends or the college. He was an orphan doing what it takes to survive. Now that he is a self-made entrepreneur he would have no qualms admitting that the family where he worked made him obtain a fraudulent degree. All it would do is strip the real Rancho of his degree.

I never thought that the movie endorses fraud. It merely shed light on how those with money/power do defraud the system.

What it truly highlighted for me was

1) True intelligence is not in test scores or degrees but being able to apply one's skills and talents for growth and success

2) There are several genuinely gifted students who never make it through our education due to lack of funds/resources or an assessment structure that rewards memorization instead of practical applications. There are tons of folks in India who can wire circuits for an entire building, build simple machines, perform complex calculations without any formal education.

3) Education is not about topping the class and showing down others, but using the opportunity to collaborate, build community, and leverage each others ability to become better individuals intellectually and socially

Yes it does, you are raising an issue about something that released 10 years ago and made so many crores already lol I am just not understanding the point?

Plus its a movie, why do movies have to cater to our moral compasses and logic barometers?

But Chatur used to mug up without understanding anything. It was proved when he gave his speech. Such a person can top in University exams but will never be successful in career. Because even bookish knowledge will be helpful but pure mugging is of no use.

Phunsuk Wangdu was an adult and was responsible for his own actions. He wasn't exploited by Ranchhodas family. He could've said no and walked away. Being an orphan doesn't give him right to commit fraud. He was part of the act, so yes, he can be charged for faking identity.

I used to work in a company, well it is dead now, so taking its name wouldn't be any harm, Aircel Northeast circle. We had few people in the office who were Head of many important departments, and highly educated, but all of them utter fools when it came to understandings simple concepts of the business, and one common trait I noticed in those kind of person was they all were chaplus. Chatur in the movie was also a chaplus.

He got success, but excellence was something which he lacked, hence he was still doing the job of a chaplus
