Priyanka ke fans se debate ka koi fayeda nahi hai. Saree was worn without a blouse in Bengal by common people, that's true. Humne bhi padha hai history lessons mein. BUT wo toh sirf Bengal mein tha na. Koi bhi historical trivia lake chipka dia inhone. This is what I found in wiki ----
History of sari-like drapery is traced back to the Indus Valley Civilisation, which flourished during 2800–1800 BC around the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent.[4][5][6] Cotton was first cultivated and woven in Indian subcontinent around 5th millennium BC.[16] Dyes used during this period are still in use, particularly indigo, lac, red madder and turmeric.[17] Silk was woven around 2450 BC and 2000 BC.[18][19]
The word 'sari' evolved from 'sattika' mentioned in earliest Jain and Buddhist literature as women's attire.[20][12] The Sari or Sattika evolved from a three-piece ensemble comprising the Antriya, the lower garment; the Uttariya; a veil worn over the shoulder or the head; and the Stanapatta, a chestband.
--- In the last line, they say they used to wear chest band. That would be a blouse. Also, saree is apparently originated from Indus Valley Civilisation which was millenia ago and I think the sculptures from ancient history show blouse or something strapped on the breasts? Definitely the british didn't invade then to tell the Indians to start wearing a blouse LOL
This is the problem with blind Priyanka bashers. They know little and argue with little knowledge and know-it-all attitude.
It was not only the Bengali women who used to wear saree with out blouse . It was the same in South as well. There are ample examples across many temple spanning over all the northern states , where women has been sculpted in the walls as topless with their breast uncovered and only in some of them a loose piece of clothes worn like dupatta or odni , NOT tied across the chest or covering the breast. The famous sculptures of khajuraho ( MP ) , Konark , Lingaraj temple ( orissa) , sun temple of Gujrat ... one state yeah right. Why people bother opening their mouth when they are little informed??
Lastly , Tagore family women didn't usher in practice of wearing blouses with saree just in Bengal , but in India. This family was held in high esteem from a cultural point of view across the country, which enabled them to have such an influence.
I'd also like to attach this article by BBC that discusses the advent of blouse within Indian style and fashion.
