I am not sure..but one must create something new and different with every character.

This is what lacking in most actors today. Alia and Ranbir are prime examples of it. They keep doing similar characters with different storyline. Alia has a long way to go before achieving that. The last true versatile actress we had was Rani.

I agree with the fact that Alia is extremely lucky to get roles on platters given by Karan Johar but still apart from that she really can deliver her roles and that's a big factor why she is appreciated a lot.

Not a fan of Alia, but what I have seen that definitely she has done different roles in her career and the way it has been depicted that Alia has played bechari for most of the times, I can't really agree on that.

In her debut movie student of the year she showed attitudes like Bebo (definitely she copied her and also her character was kinda similar to Poo from K3G that's why). In both Badrinaath Ki Dulhania movies her characters were of a simple girl. In Udta Punjab she tried to do something different if we keep the rona-dhona thingy apart. In Razi definitely there was something different about her like the way she emoted her expressions. Nevertheless, what I have observed that her characters in both Highway and Dear Zindagi were tremendously similar!

About being versatile, still Alia has a long a way to go for that and the same applies for Varun too. He has given hits from different banners but yet he cannot be considered as versatile actor till date.

I beg to differ. IMO Kangana, Vidya, PC, and yes Kareena are all more versatile than Alia. I know people get mad at me for mentioning Kareena. She got typecast in the beginning of her career where she was playing poorly written versions of Poo over and over.

But to me she is very versatile.
Chameli - Not a character that evoked sympathy. There was no heavy duty crying. But for someone who grew up in elite circles, to capture the body language, speaking style and mannerisms of a street prostitute in India so well was amazing. This too in the beginning of her career. Remember this came very early in her career.

She did well in tragedy when she tried it too. For example, Dev or Omkara. Her comic skills were probably amongst the best we have seen since Juhi. No one else could have done a Geet and made it iconic as it became. It was after she did this role that the bubbly girl became so popular and other talented actresses like Anushka and Parineeti started doing bubbly roles well. But no character was as iconic. Her less appreciated performance in Fida, as a negative character, wasn't all the bad either.

Yes, she has made some very poor career choices. Her script sense goes on vacation for something commercial or high paying along comes. But to me, I have seen the potential to show more variety of emotions that Alia's repetitive work. I do not notice the difference in some of her character in terms of mannerism. Barring Udta Punjab where she did do a lot of work with speech coaches among other things. This is again, strictly my opinion people are again free to disagree if they wish to do so.

I know many in the forum already consider Alia above Kareena as an actress.

She probably needs to pick up a more variety of roles but whatever I saw her in, at least she delivers what's needed of the role...That is,she doesn't put me off as a viewer, is what I am trying to say!
