All we are saying is, stop using women's trauma as a plot point. It is lazy and disrespectful.

Well I hope a movie is made where a women is shown in a heroic light and protects men, that wud be awesome

I personally didn't find simmba to be disrespectful to womem but again that's my perspective, you have a different take on it and that's fine

I haven't seen the movie but chalo maan lia, that the rape plot has to be used.. But why specifically sister? Would Simba or any other movie character who is supposed to repent and understand the gravity of the situation if he comes across a rape victim who he could not save... would that suffice to change his thinking.. I have asked this question before and I just cannot shake it away.. Why always the sister? Isn't this kind of working on the ideology k jab tak apne ghar ki aurton k saath nahi hota, rape ka matlab samajh nahi ata?

these are completely different films. I have not seen soni so I cant comment on it. simmba surely had its flaws and some things could have been conveyed differently..but at the end of the day it conveyed a message that rape is wrong to the masses. the people who flock to the theaters to watch masala movies, a large proportion of them are lower class and uneducated who sometimes do not know how to act decently with woman. maybe a film like simmba changed someones mindset in regards on how to treat a woman.
and the fact that it is the sister...is is more likely to leave an impact among this audience. it makes it more hard hitting and I can understand why this was used
people who complain on using the topic of rape. it is good that the topic is made about that because currently in india this is a problem.

movies are a great platform to educate the audience, and although simmba is over the top and not entirely realistic, and glorifies some male qualities that it probably shouldn't
It may leave a hard impact on the next man who may think of raping someone.
this is just my opinion

Also the girl wasn't Simmba's actual sister, simmba is an orphan and he has no family, the girl is someone who he calls sister

Haven't seen Soni, but read the article.
Soni is for people who don't mind realism and are willing to critically think for complex messages.

Simmba is for the masses who crave masala flicks, ott heroes and do not want to think critically about issues - but need the message drilled in.

A perfect world would be all Sonis. But it takes all kinds.

Just finished watching Soni and I'm completely blown away!! I guess I've already seen one of the best films of 2019! Can't believe so much of anger has been translated so beautifully to visuals onscreen. Soni is unapologetically realistic and cannot be compared to a massy fantasy film like Simmba. But I do get where the writer is coming from and what she is trying to say. That fantasty and the real world is completely different. Both Simmba and Soni take law in their own hands but the way they are dealt with is completely different. The article did make me see Simmba in a new light again, especially why the character was problematic. So I do agree with the last paragraph of the writer that Soni would have much more check boxes to fill if she was a Simmba in the real world.

But I also agree with Kabir that blaming Simmba alone for fulfilling the vigilante fantasy of the audience is not right because I have seen the same kind of enthusiasm from the audience during Mardaani and Mom, both films where rhe climax revolves around rape and assault. I guess that's just what the audience likes these days but yes, character wise, definitely it's much more difficult to survive as Soni than Simmba in the real world.

Anyways, thanks to this article and social media discussions, got to watch probably one of the most realistic hindi cop films till date. It's haunting, beautiful and hopeful at the same time. Would definitely recommend this film. The pace is quiet slow but perfect for watching at home and I guess that's why they couldn't get a perfect portal than Netflix. Aaj puri raat Soni ke baare mein sochte sochte hi kat jaayegi. That's how good and important the film is!
