You mean ToH?
Both. Nor the performances neither the script, toh had nothing to offer.
The point I was trying to convey was, if Aamir couldn't pull a film to 200 crs would the cast of Takht ? If film opens to equally bad reviews, I believe they need some big names to grab the initial at least.

I corrected the movie's name.

TOH did not fail because of the cast but because it had a weak script and bad WOM. If casting was an issue, Raazi or VDW also did not have a great casting and neither Alia nor Kareena or Sonam can make people watch the film for them but they managed it as the movies had a good WOM. Takht will fail if it has a bad WOM no matter if it has a Khan or not as the budget will be huge but if it has a good WOM, things will be different.

I feel the budget of Takht will be lower than Padmaavat and TOH and they need to lower it if they really want to make a profit and the movie a hit. If the budget is over 200 crores, even a good WOM would not be able to earn it a BB verdict with the current cast while if they cast a Khan, the budget would increase even more. After Sanju, even Ranbir has hiked his fee.

Focus on story and keeping the sets/songs/feel relevant to the time. Yes def needs a good director. Ashutosh's Lagaan & Jodha Akbar were bang on. Mohenjodaro though was not good. Even SLB goes overboard sometimes with his sets but Padma was done well.

Toh didn't fail because of casting or the fact that it was a period film. It failed because of storyline & also the trailers looked bad (it didn't seem real at all). Even if you are going to write fiction based on the past, the storyline has to fit the time & place. You have to make the audience feel like they are in the past...one look at Katrina in that song & you know Toh is unreal. Immediate turn off.

Unless you are Tolkein & creating your own universe, you cannot just do whatever you please in a period film.

Also look at Spanish series like Gran Hotel or Cable Girls or Love in times of War...great great work. I mention Spanish series because their storylines are quite cheesy like Bollywood. But they are delightful masala series with excellent production values with progressive thoughts & ideas & emotions! You relate! Period fiction at best in my opinion.

Also not every director is capable of directing a period drama. There's a distinct atmosphere required to get it right. Don't think anyone else in the current lot has it. SLB has tons of flaws but he gets the feel right. Ashutosh did it too with Jodha-Akbar too. So Takht needs a good director before anything else.

I'm so used to him being referred to as SLB that at first reading I thought you were talking about Sunjay Dutt and was utterly confused 😆.

On topic, I'm sure a lot of producers are a little panicked now after what happened with TOH. But like everyone else has said their main worry should be about their script and how the movie is or will be directed. That being said the cast can make a huge difference in the opening numbers and that can sometimes push the movie's final numbers out of a flop to an average. I just don't know who they can replace with whom in Takht to improve their chances with the men. The Khans still have the opening number powers but they are not an option here. Everyone else is more or less on equal footing. With women if they kick someone off and get Deepika they might have a better shot at a bigger opening day.

Opening number power 🤣

Yah yah Festival Holidays + Create the hype around the movie ( fool the audience by taking advantage of the festival ) + increase the ticket prices and get the opening

But Khans have no power to bring the audience to watch their bad movies after the " Opening Numbers 😉 😆 ... I wonder why ?

well they are regularly bringing 1 Crore+ people in the theater, many failed even with holidays. And with bad WOM, others movies don't even reach 50 lakhs.
Only SRK failed to bring that with JHMS, which had disaster WOM.
I think you're seriously underestimating their star power.

As for the OP, Thugs failed because it had a bad script and screenplay.
Casting had nothing to do with it.
IF as usual hating on Alia, and going on with their anyone but Alia bakchodi.

No need for recasting this movie needs to have a solid screenplay and story. Stay authentic to the history with blend of fiction, not to much.
To me SLB is overrated an okay director but a good set designer. Ashustosh was good when he made Jodha Akhber, got the period right.

The actors can do only little if the screenplay is bad, unless an actor is to good can overcome the flaws or has done preparation then its a different story.
