Lata Mangeshkar on Atif Aslam's version of Chalte Chalte song: I don't want to hear it

When a media agency asked Lata Mangeshkar about Atif Aslam's version of her song Chalte Chalte from Pakeezah, the legendary singer revealed that she doesn't want to hear it.

Recently, Atif Aslam crooned the recreated version of Lata Mangeshkar's soulful song Chalte Chalte from Pakeezah for the upcoming film Mitron. The music and lyrics for the cover version were given by Tanishk Bagchi. This rendition received a lot of mixed reaction from the listeners as many slammed the makers for recreating a classic track. The music for the original song picturised on Meena Kumari was given by Ghulam Mohammed while the beautiful lyrics were penned by Kaifi Azmi.
Recently, IANS asked Lata Didi about her reaction on the recreated version of Chalte Chalte, to which she said that she hasn't heard it. The legendary singer stated, "And I don't want to hear it. This trend of remixing old songs saddens me. Where is the creativity in simply lifting acknowledged, beloved classics and shuffling the notes around? I've even heard that the lyrics are changed in the remixes. By whose consent?" She further said, "The original poets and composers wrote what they had to. Nobody has the right to tamper with the creativity of these great composers and lyricists."
Earlier, when singer Babul Supriyo was asked about the song, he said, "Today, even the'poetic' term artistic liberty' is at the verge of extinction. With due respect (and disrespect) to Atif Aslam, as a singer myself, I will observe a 2-minute silence to mourn rather than offering a comment."
Moreover, Alka Yagnik also shared her reaction when asked about the recreation of her song Dilbar. She said, "Why don't they make a new song and make it a super hit if they can, instead of picking up an already super hit song, distorting it, and releasing it again... and then saying, See, it's become so popular!"

Remakes really need to stop...it really doesn't make sense to recreate hit songs to gain hype for a movie..where's the originality??

She always have that pissed off look on her face behind that fake smiling face. I guess she is having a hard time accepting that people's teste in song have been changed. Its not 80s 90s anymore.

Grumpy old woman complex. They always complain and complain. AIthough with this I kind of agree.
I don't mind remixes or remakes if their essence is preserved. Perfect example is Halka Halka song from Fanney Khan. Nusrat originally sang it. Farhan remade it and honestly it was no less beautiful. But the version in Fanney Khan is absolutely cringe-worthy. They completely changed the song's attitude from soft romantic to peppy.
Another beautiful remake was Teri Faryad of Koyi Fariyad in Tum Bin 2. They had retained the originality.

Lata is a legendary singer but she's so arrogant man . I hate this mentality of the older generation to keep running down the young. Get over yourselves lmao.

As for remixes, yeah some of them suck but some of them are done well. I do agree that there are too many but there this an audience for them all the same. All the artists who sing these songs now always acknowledge the original singers so why be rude.

Golden words... Lata Didi is right... all those poets made those songs hit on their own creativity...

there is nothing great in making remixes and getting fame on someone else's shoulders... Itna talent hai toh kuch unique banao... but utni himmat hai kaha... bass dusron ka talent churao aur paise banao...sadly that is our generations quick fix for life...

Overreactions galore. Lata is an egoistic, eccentric person who killed careers of many potential great singers including her own sisters. It was Asha's grit n determination that got her to create a career even though her own sister was hell bent on ruining it all. Heard the new version and its not bad. Atleast this way her sing will find new audiences. She is just salty that she is not that relevant anymore.

Well she is not entirely wrong. Chalte chalte is a timeless classic you think of grace, poise and Meena Kumari when this song comes into the mind and the latest version cannot even be called a tribute to it sorry to say forget even comparing or doing justice to the original. And no it's not Atif's fault he has done a good job with what he was given he is good I'll give him that. In fact my most favourite remake is Atif's dekhte dekhte from Batti Gul I think he has done a brilliant job with a song which is also sung by a legend like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The problem with this one is that the way its rendered it has killed the essence of the song, its sounds too different from the original and since the original is such a classic you prefer it.
If they remake songs at least don't ruin their essence maintain some of its originality they won't be that terrible and torture to hear but please do not turn it into something people can't even recognise because the nostalgia factor gets ruined. Even better make new songs instead of remakes especially when you can't do justice to the original ones.
