I don't know why even after so much time, I felt like watching a review of this film. Actually, all the people I have talked to about the movie, I didn't feel like I have been able to express or heard exactly how I felt about it. So, I saw this today randomly and decided to watch it cuz I recently watched Son of Abish episode with Swara and Kaneez and liked her in it. I liked the review and decided to share it here.

I like Kaneez & I really liked this review too. Normalisation is exactly what I too say from this film too!!! Normalisation of language, sexual freedom & habits that have always been held to be reprehensible for women & if they indulge in all this, they aren't "good." A certain bit of hypocrisy plays into U.S., into me too, and as someone who used to be a heavy smoker & drinker I can safely say that I 'oppressively' played into these stereotypes in front of adults because it was just so much easier & it works wonderfully for me because I am always dressed in Indian traditional anyway!! LOL. It's just fun too after a point. This is how I related to this film & I am sure many other Indian must have too & it's also the main reason why I loved this film. And besides Avni & Sonam, I really enjoyed all the stories &'actors ESP Kareena, Shikha is hugely under-rated, and Swara even though she played a very similar character to her other characters, just as a noveau riche richie rich. 😆 VDW has all my love & it's one of my fav films of the year. IDC who calls it superficial, rich people problems becuase it's so dismissive of people to toss them aside just because a few characters are moneyed & through that, privileged. I love it!

Yes!! I didn't realise it while watching but the movie did normalise a lot of things. No "special handling" of any controversial subjects. I liked especially how even the gy's parents were so cool about everything. Usually, you would expect them to look down on Kareena and her friends regarding a lot of things, but it was in a way the other way round lol. I liked Kareena the best and Swara acted well. I related the most with Sonam's character though out of all those. Upar se sati, andar se s**tty type haha.. I think it has great repeat value too, I can watch it a couple of times again. Finally a good girl gang movie (sorry haven't watched Angry goddesses or anything else). I hope Sonam and Rhea continue making these sort of movies. They are tapping a market that's been largely ignored in India. They have a permanent viewer in me for sure.

^^Oh right off the bat it's the normalisation that got me!!! Hence I loved the film. Does have great repeat value, I'll probably Netflix it on my holiday in a few days. This is why I've changed my view on Sonam's producer skills, I dint think she would make a good director, but as a producer, yesss. Ha ha I've lot of things in common with Avni too nut I liked Kalindi, Sakshi & Meera most. I hope too they make such films in different goners & if they want to show rich people then bloody hell show them & chuck the haters!!!!

I live in hostel situated at the outskirts of city, and all the girls around me either drink or smoke, wear comfy shorts. The university I am part of is a richie rich one. When I move out of my campus, the ladies are mostly poor and I dont think they enjoy such freedom or luxury. Even in the city I see girls mostly dressed in traditional cloths. So I understand there is a dichotomy in how the relatively rich(upper middle class urban population) people live vs how majority of Indians live. So in a way I get it when people say this movie is not a reality. But I am glad it was made, because as a demographic we are the least represented in any sphere of public domain.

Well I think any ONE movie doesn't have to represent all sections of the society, it is just not possible anyway. Like this movie is about girls more than guys so guys are not represented here? So what? Same way it's a movie about rich girls and general public may not be represented here but do we only watch movies that has leads completely like us? So many people watch movies across cultures, Hollywood, Korean etc. Those will have almost no similarity to an Indian viewer probably but they still watch it. Because sometimes you like watching other people or different experiences also. Sometimes you just like watching opulence onscreen cuz you can't have it in real life and that's the best way you can have an experience of it. So, I think it's cool. I don't feel offended at all. What they showed in the movie is also true, just for a very small group, that's it.

If that was a reply to me, then I am saying the same thing you are! I am glad they did represent a story about a woman from middle class urban India!

IMO only Sonam makes these types of movies- Khoobsurat, VDW, Aisha. I like them a lot.

It wasn't a reply, I was just expressing my views generally. But yeah I loved all those movies even though they had their own flaws. But at least someone is trying to make a movie that makes some sense and provides variety. Warna masala movies and commercial cinema ke naam pe kachra mil raha hai BW mein .
