Exclusive: Janhvi Kapoor opens up on Dhadak trailer being trolled

Janhvi Kapoor

It is not every day that you see a star kid making her big Bollywood debut with a banner like Dharma Productions. But Janhvi Kapoor is not your usual star kid. The daughter of late Bollywood actress Sridevi and film producer Boney Kapoor, Janhvi is looking at a big-budget debut in Shashank Khaitan's Dhadak.

In the film, 21-year-old Janhvi plays Parthavi opposite Ishaan Khatter, who will be seen as Madhukar in this tale of two star-cross'd lovers. Dhadak is a remake of Marathi hit Sairat, directed by Nagraj Manjule.

Ahead of her big-screen debut, India Today Television's Sushant Mehta caught up with Janhvi Kapoor.

The trailer of Dhadak received both love and hate on social media. Janhvi opens up on how she deals with the criticism that often accompanies the stardom.

ON HANDLING THE CRITICISM THAT COMES WITH THE STARDOM

Of course it affects me. But up until this point it was like, if they're going to criticise me for how I look while coming out of the gym, I don't really care. But all of a sudden, now I'm a little more nervous because I am supposed to be good at this, right? This is what I've wanted to do. I want people to love me.

The only thing that you can do is work hard and give it your all and hope that that's enough. But usually, you never know. I think that the only thing I'm trying to do is honest work. I hope that one day I will deserve people's love.

You're criticised even for being 'proper'. I don't think it's anything that I have any right to complain about. It is flattering that people take that kind of time out of their day to give me that kind of attention. I hope one day I do something to deserve it.

ON FEEDBACK ON THE DHADAK TRAILER

I'm just really thankful for the love that it's gotten. It's been overwhelming. I hope they [people who did not like the trailer] change their mind after watching the film.

BEST COMPLIMENT AND SEVERE CRITICISM

Best compliment: I don't want to say it! How can I dhindora peeto (blow my own trumpet)... A director said that you will create your own style of acting.

Severe criticism: I think I read somewhere I can't act. I went into a panic attack; [thinking] so what is my life all about then!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF JANHVI KAPOOR, BEYOND THE FILM SETS

The last two years of my life have been completely dedicated to Dhadak. Every thought has been about Parthavi and Madhukar; working towards finding her. It's just all been that and now that's it's completed, I'm excited to put it out there. I don't know who I am anymore because all of us feel so immersed in the story.

ON KHUSHI CRYING AT DHADAK TRAILER LAUNCH

Both of us were in shock. In my entire life, I've probably seen her crying only two or three times. So we just hugged each other, and she said, 'I don't know why I am crying'. It was a very special moment. Maybe I have done something very, very wrong and that's why she was crying!

QUALITIES TO IMBIBE FROM SRIDEVI

My mom always used to say that in order to be a good actor, you need to be a good person. Because the camera is very smart. If you're not a good person, if you're fake, it shows. If your heart is not clean, it is visible.

Janhvi Kapoor on Sridevi's sudden death: Dhadak saved me

Janhvi Kapoor opened up on life without mom Sridevi.

Janhvi Kapoor is set to make her Bollywood debut with Dhadak, but her mom Sridevi won't be able to see the final cut. It was Sridevi who wanted her daughter to make her big screen debut with Karan Johar's Dharma Productions.

Janhvi bagged the leading role in Shashank Khaitan's Dhadak, an official remake of hit Marathi film Sairat. And after months of hard work, her debut film will hit the screens on July 20.

When the trailer of Dhadak released last week, the entire Kapoor clan came to cheer for Janhvi. With the sudden demise of Sridevi, things haven't been the same for Janhvi. However, the star kid displayed immense professionalism when she returned to the film sets a few weeks after her mom's death. And since then she has been keeping herself busy with her work.

In an exclusive interview to India Today Television's Sushant Mehta, Janhvi for the first time opened up on life after Sridevi and how she pulled herself out of the shocking experience.

"It hasn't been an easy experience. My work and my family have given me the strength to go on. If it wasn't for coming back to the sets of Dhadak or being able to act, I think it would have been much tougher than what it is now. I am very thankful that I had the opportunity to work in the film and act. It saved me in many ways," Janhvi said.

With only a month left for Dhadak to hit the screens, Janhvi is bracing herself for her first step into Bollywood. When asked if she always wanted to be an actress like her mom, she said, "I don't know if I always knew that I wanted to act but I was always inclined towards movies. It is something that I am very passionate about. Working in Dhadak feels like a dream come true. It is too good to be true."

She added that coming from a filmi family, movies was something that was always interested in. "In my family, it is the only that we discuss. It's the only thing we knew. Every time we sit at home and have a conversation with one another, it was always about films. Even when we go out to spend time together, we go out to watch a movie. Holidays were always about dad's shooting schedules or mom's shooting schedules. We have grown up in that environment," added Janhvi.

Janhvi Kapoor: Dhadak is our tribute to Sairat

Janhvi Kapoor

The buzz around Shashank Khaitan's Dhadak, starring Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter reached a feverish pitch, after the trailer released.

Dhadak is an adaptation of the critically acclaimed Marathi blockbuster, Sairat, which revolved around the 'forbidden' love between two people from different classes of society - Archana, the daughter of an influential local politician, and Prashant, the son of a fisherman. The music of the film also won hearts.

Of course, remaking such a successful film is not easy, and comes with its share of problems. Though the trailer was mostly well-received, people couldn't resist drawing comparisons to the original film.

In an exclusive interview to Sushant Mehta, India Today Television, Janhvi, who is making her Bollywood debut with Dhadak said, "I was blown away by Sairat. I'm well-aware that we can't touch upon something as pure as that. It's just such a universal subject, and it can be recreated and represented in so many ways. Dhadak is our tribute to Sairat."

In most of the promos of Dhadak, we can see Janhvi's character Parthavi eating some sort of food or the other. It's clearly no secret that Janhvi enjoyed eating on the film sets.

Asked if she is a foodie, Janhvi wholeheartedly agreed. "Shashank has been a lot of fun, and he keeps pulling my leg. In the beginning I was doing so much physical activity, so even asked me to gain weight for the film, and look healthier." She laughed, "He had to ask me to control, as I would keep eating. He was like, 'What have you done?'

I figure it helped that she was working as she was able to distract herself through her work. I wonder how it has been for her sister though, though she seems stronger tougher she is a teen and grief no matter what will eventually catch up with one especially grief that losing a parent/s brings along. I hope for her to seek professional therapy. Hiding away from it wont help in the long run.
That being said. I still dont think she was good in the trailer

Sorry Janhvi you seem a sweet girl but you should also realize movies are not for you. You have Zero screen presence. You are the next Esha Deol. Find a new career path. Don't wast your time.

I watched Sairat's trailer after Dhadak's and it was miles better. Not only it was non glamorous and more realistic, the acting was way better too. The trailer was edited very well and it turned dark, I had goosebumps. So, Dhadak was like just 10% of that. Jhanvi's accent was... not impressive, she's just trying to make it look glamorous and yeah she probably wants to do those kind of roles later but then why not start with a glam role and let someone else do this movie? But I liked her interview. And I like how she looks better than before.
