I honestly don't get the whole debate about how women being "allowed" to cuss, have a self-pleasure scene in a movie is considered less path-breaking than the movies made on female wrestlers or female hygiene (periods, toilets etc).
Veere Di Wedding should not be reduced to an adult movie because it is much more than that. It is a liberal and relatable movie. I cannot relate to a movie about sanitary napkins because I didn't have that upbringing but I can relate to a girl being labelled s**t if she has a certain lifestyle. I can attest to the fact that a women can never be "complete" until she gets married. Why can't we talk about these issues. The rating of Veere Di Wedding at 2.6 on Imdb just shows how uncomfortable our society as a whole is to accept a movie that is liberal. So, yes this movie and that scene should be celebrated not for some path-breaking cinema but for being the first commercial movie to talk and celebrate the lives of these women.

Menstruation in Padman is as path breaking as female masturbation in Veere. Because we keep hiding them! Dangal is as important as Veere. It is important to understand that a woman can do anything a man can but it is equally important to understand that a woman also has sexual desires like any dude! We talk about men's sexual lives very openly...so why are we shy about our own? 😃

I think path-breaking was the fact that Censor Board asked for no cuts and passed the movie as it is. Just imagine if Pahlaj Nihalani was still around😆

i

Isn't Swara the daughter of someone at the censor board ? Perhaps that's why she got a free pass

Thank you for this post. This describes exactly why i liked it so much. While I admire movies like Dangal and Padman, those are alien experiences to me. This is more my life.

I didn't realize how utterly sexist and misogynist our society still is till this movie came out. Even the ones who scream at the top of their lungs about their support of women empowerment at the core are threatened by movie like this which utterly dispenses the societal constraints and shows women as they truly are. It seems sexist people are not large-hearted enough to accept the narrative that women are imperfect humans, too. Heck someone on twitter was saying Pyaar ka Puchnama was a dialogue on social and cultural realities of our society in comparison to this movie. 😆 It seems people have no problem celebrating movies like PKP and SKTKS, but give them one movie where women do the same thing and have fun, albeit without the male bashing, and the whole world falls apart and people start getting personally offended and diss the movie like no other WITHOUT even watching it once. Seeing all that, Only thing I can think is that we still have a LONG long way to go in terms of equality.

The fact about celebrating the movies success and it being called path-breaking is that we first time see women talking about their sex lives and sharing intimate details ON-SCREEN without making it look too vulgar or indecent. This is how most girls discuss about their boyfriends and husbands and it may not be the case with everyone but nowadays people do. Back then also married women used to share intimate details about their husbands like men do but when people watch it on screen, they can't digest it. It's being compared to a p movie and the people who go to watch such movie are also judged besides the actors of the movie itself shows how people can't see women even talking about such things. It's like people expect women to only talk about their office-school-home experience or organize prayer meetings when they meet but it's never true as what women can't share with their parents is these details. They feel as if the world will come down if they do so.

Both movies Padman and VDW were movies based on facts that are true and people can't discuss (especially women). If one movie was praised, why is the other one condemned? Especially married people discuss about their sex lives with their friends. That's the reason people went to watch the movie. My theater was itself packed where men, women from all ages came to watch it. If it was something disgusting, why they would even buy the ticket? Nobody was ashamed to watch it even though they knew the concept.
