Only bcoz they have not done commercial masala movies..the kind that mass audience watches..their debuts have been unconventional and they followed it up with more hatke movies.
Kriti Sanon is also n outsider..so is Kartik Aryan. But they r talked about more coz they did regular kind of movies

Critics tend to overpraise Average lookers as "Super great" Actors out of sympathy. Most of them are One trick ponies.

Irrfan, Nawaz, Radhika, Bhumi, Rajkumar and all the arthouse actors, who are praised by critics and the niche audience. They all lack one thing, which stops them from gaining popularity among the mass audience, and that is "Star Quality".

Now this star quality can be anything. Like for Irrfan Khan, he's my favorite actor. Apart from being a great actor, he has screen presence and charisma, but he doesn't have good looks, and his acting style is subtle which is appreciated more in Hollywood than Bollywood. He's not quintessential Bollywood hero who can do action or dance. He's a theatre actor.

Nawaz is an actor who has screen presence, charisma, acting skills which is appreciated by Indian audience(he puts alot of energy in his acting). He could've been a Superstar, ONLY if he had good or atleast average looks.

Rajkumar too is a great actor, but he lacks screen presence and charisma. He's also more of a theatre actor.

Coming to Bhumi and Radhika, Bhumi is just not glamourous or atleast beautiful to become popular as a mainstream actress. Though like Irrfan, she also has screen presence and charisma. But tharki audience wants good looking size-zero actresses on screen, even if they can't mouth Hindi dialogues properly and have no personality.

Radhika is the best actress in Bollywood right now imo. She's much better than others, when it just comes to acting. But she also lacks screen presence and charisma, not beautiful enough.

To become a popular actor among the mass audience, a Bollywood actor needs to have screen presence, charisma, need to have decent looks, atleast know how to act even if you are below average, know how to do action, dance.

Arthouse actors always lack something among these qualities, and that's why never become popular. Although they are always appreciated because they do their job perfectly, which is doing great acting, which are "actors" actually supposed to do.

Thank you for this in depth analysis. Loved your insight.👏

So would you surmise that subtle acting and lack of standard good looks is one of the major reason we do not hear about them more? Even if their acting is acclaimed?

I have seen many of their movies and I felt that sometimes they were THE driving force of the scenes and the ones doing great in the acting department, but we rarely hear that X,Y,Z movie is an 'Irrfan movie', or 'Nawaz movie', or 'Bhumi's', or 'Radhika's' ...

Subtle acting is only done by Irrfan and Rajkumar I guess. Most of the time, it's lack of charisma, screen presence, looks and glamour, which the audience look for the most.

Irrfan and Nawaz have still been able to make a name for themselves. But you don't hear much Radhika and Bhumi, because they are still quite new.

It's only we niche audience who see these actors as the driving force of any movie. But for majority of Indian audience, Salman and SRK are the best actors in Bollywood. Not saying we are special people, just in the minority.

@Luna46: I guess you are right. So then I might be part of a niche audience.

Whenever I see the Lunchbox, I notice little things that are so impactful yet subtle between Irrfan and Nawaz. Talvar, for me, was as great as Madaari and Paan Singh Tomar. Of course I loved Irrfan in Life of Pi and even in the Slumdog/Jurassic World movies(but again his part in Jurassic wasn't as big). I loved Bajrangi Bhaijaan but the scene that stood with me the most- besides some scenes with Harshali- was Nawaz trying to get his 'reporting done'. Badlapur for me was Nawaz at his best. Loved Raman Raghav 2.0 because of him. Gangs of Wasseypur was again one big part of why I started to love him. Hindi Medium was Irrfan everywhere.

I was expecting them to 'explode' in further roles, yet nothing really happened. They still make small budget movies.
I know that they have both acted in many more movies that I haven't mentioned or haven't seen yet- these are just some of the movies that came to my mind now.

Nawaz and Irrfan have parts in so many hits, but their parts are small in the huge movies. Is that due to other stars, or simply because they cannot get a bigger part written for them? (And yes, I do know that there are many other actors, like Manoj Bajpayee and so on that also shine in small roles).

And honestly, I never look to an actor for his 'looks'. Whilst I might 'like' the look of one actor or another, the deciding factor for me is how much I enjoy their performance. How much I believe in their role. I like actors that are subtle and also actors that aren't so. Still, their performance has to ring true with me. So in that respect, I see Irrfan and Nawaz in same light as I see other actors- to me it matters not how good looking they are, but how well they can enact their partm, or how well they can connect with me emotionally.

Their intentional or unintentional show of their insecurities and inferiority complex (specially bhumi) is a put off.
Other than people who hate star kids no.matter what I don't think these two are as talented as a vidya or a n anushka or a deepika. These two just don't have that spark

And rajkumar rao is admired by many but the drawback is that people don't know his name. He is always talked about as "newton" movie wala or "city lights" wala.. So people know him but by his characters.
