Raid Movie Review: As the title of the movie, it starts with an unkown Raid. Director Raj Kumar Gupta decides to keep the suspense under the wraps and pulls back the story a month earlier. Introducing Amay Patnaik (Ajay Devgn), a honest I-drink-what-I-can-afford, IAS officer.
He's honest, he's strict and decides to go after people who are stealing taxes from the government. Amay has a loving wife in Nita Patnaik (Ileana D'Cruz) who is annoyed by his 49 transfers till now.
Raid Movie Review QuickerAmay gets an unkown call who gives him leads about a big fish stealing tax. Trusting his instincts, Amay decides to execute this raid by teaming up with his men. Following an interesting pattern, Amay without letting anyone know about the assessee goes ahead to raid his house.
Couple of songs in the first half surely spoils the party and could easily have been avoided. Good thing is, the songs are in bits and pieces. First half of the movie ends on a brilliant note building up a strong base for the second one. One brilliant thing about the first half of the movie is its subtle humour, it's there throughout.
The Ajay Devgn, Ileana D'Cruz and Saurabh Shukla starrer Raid is hitting theatres on March 16. Touted as the first Bollywood project to be based on an Income Tax raid, Raid is helmed by Raj Kumar Gupta. Set in the 80s, Raid explores how one of the country's most high-profile raids was executed by a fearless IT Officer called Amay Patnaik.
Before Raid releases tomorrow, we give you five reasons to watch this Ajay Devgn film:
Stellar star cast
Raj Kumar Gupta's upcoming film boasts of a stellar star cast. First up, we have the talented Ajay Devgn in the role of Amay Patnaik, a no-nonsense Income Tax Officer who is hell-bent on curbing the problem of tax evasion in his area. On the other side is the masterful Saurabh Shukla in the role of a wealthy goon, who goes by the name of Tauji. Ileana D'Cruz is playing the role of Devgn's wife.
True-to-life story
Ajay Devgn's Raid is said to be inspired by real-life Income Tax raids conducted in the 80s. While many of us are aware of the way the IT Department has been conducting its raids in the past years, the film explores what goes on behind-the-scenes when some of the most politically and financially backed people of the society are put under the scanner.
Helmed by Aamir director Raj Kumar Gupta
Raid director Raj Kumar Gupta has films like Aamir and No One Killed Jessica to his credit. While No One Killed Jessica was based on the Jessica Lal murder case, Aamir dealt with the story of an NRI doctor who is threatened by extremists. His films have been gripping stories that talk about a larger issue but are still rooted in reality. With Raid too, Raj Kumar Gupta is all set to outshine himself.
The 80s UP timeline
Set in 1981 Lucknow, Raid also promises to capture the nuances of an era gone by. From the music, the language to the overall setting, it looks like the makers have made ample effort to stick true to the timeline. And considering the growing interest of cinephiles in local UP stories (Bareilly Ki Barfi, Jolly LLB 2, Badrinath Ki Dulhania), Raid is set on the right track.
Powerful dialogues
Another thing that has stood out in the Raid trailer is the way Shukla and Devgn have imbibed the local language of Northern India to deliver more relatable performances. While Shukla's dialogue "Andar toh aa gaye ho, bahar kaise jaoge? and "Rajaji Ki Fauj! have already struck a chord with the meme population, Ajay Devgn's "Mein jiske ghar subah subah pahuch jau, kuch na kuch nikal kar hi lata hu. show us the brilliance of writer Ritesh Shah.
Ajay Devgn and Saurabh Shukla are all set to raid the theatres on March 16.
Raid, which is set to release on Friday, March 16, has received positive reviews from the audience in UAE, where the movie hit the theatres on Thursday.
Starring Ajay Devgn and Ileana D'Cruz in lead roles, Raid is a crime drama and is based on true incidents.
Many viewers said that Raid is an entertaining film with hard-hitting dialogues and is engaging throughout. Besides Ajay's flawless acting skills, Saurabh Shukla's performance won hearts.
Directed by Raj Kumar Gupta, Raid is inspired by a true story about money laundering and is set in 1981. It revolves around an income tax officer (played by Ajay) in Lucknow who has to raid the house of a wealthy goon (Saurabh Shukla) and later goes through some struggles to get out of that building.
Interestingly, Ileana, who shared the screen space with Ajay in Baadshaho, is seen as his wife in the movie.
The Raid trailer garnered appreciation for its punchy-oneliners, which were delivered efficiently by the lead actors. Apart from the main cast, the movie also features professional and renowned theatre artists from Lucknow to make the story look more credible and realistic.

Without wasting much time, Gupta reveals Rameshwar Singh (Saurabh Shukla), an infamous MP of the area whose house gets raided by Amay. Gupta takes the entertainment question to another level as the process of raid starts in the film. The introduction scene between Amay and Rameshwar hints at what we've in store for the remaining movie.

Ajay Devgn and Ileana D'cruz's Raid is all set to hit the theatres tomorrow (March 16). Directed by Rajkumar Gupta, this one is based on a true incident of India's most high-profile income tax raid conducted in the 80s. Our film critic, Ankita Chaurasia is watching the film at a press show right now and she has sent her first impressions.
Ankita says, "Films based on true stories are quite a draw at the box office. And when the film is about an Income Tax raid, things are bound to get interesting. Ajay Devgn and Ileana D'Cruz-starrer Raid promises to be a riveting watch, right from its trailer. The fact that it has been directed by Rajkumar Gupta of No One Killed Jessica and Aamir fame, is encouraging too. But not every film on income tax raids can be a Special 26 too. So, it is with great curiosity that we set out to watch Raid. The film has reached the interval point, as we speak, and here's what's happened so far...
Amey Patnaik (Ajay Devgn), an Income Tax officer, is honest to a fault. He has been transferred 49 times thanks to his honesty, but doesn't care two hoots about it. His wife, Malini (Ileana D'Cruz), on the other hand, does get tired of the whole thing, but plays the part of the perfect wife to the T. So, when they are transferred to Lucknow, she is skeptical but puts up a brave front. However, it is here that Amey finds the case of a lifetime. He is conducting a raid on Rameshwar Singh's (Saurabh Shukla) properties. He is the local MLA with a lot of clout. But does Amey find anything there? They do. However, Rameshwar is trying his best to ensure the raid is stopped. Who will win? Let's find out...
Yo!! Very positive reviews by journalists and critics for @ajaydevgn's #Raid. It's being said as one of his best movie with some of the best dialogues ever! In your cinemas from tomorrow!! @RaidTheFilm @Ileana_Official @TSeries

What's it about?
A historic Income Tax raid by an upright IT officer who will do whatever it takes to unearth the ill-gotten wealth of a powerful politician. But will he come out unscathed?

Review
Set in 1981, Raid' is based on true events, peppered with enough cinematic liberties that makes it a delectable fare of a clash between a fearless IT officer Amay Patnaik (Ajay Devgn) and the dreaded Tauji' (Saurabh Shukla).
To say that Ajay Devgn is apt for this role, would be a gross understatement. Hi no-nonsense dialogue delivery, upright posture, fitness, and attitude are tailor-made for this role. Meanwhile, his onscreen contender Saurabh Shukkla puts up a befitting show of power, arrogance and restrain.
Heroes
Another of Raid's hero is its production design by Rita Ghosh. The palatial Lucknowi mansion of Tauji' where much of the action takes place with all of its props and people together build and take the story forward with a pace that is quite a rarity in most Hindi films.
Screenplay writer Ritesh Shah and Editor Bodhaditya Banerjee ensure that the first half starts with a bang and keeps you on the edge with a taxing urgency. The second half is comparatively slower but minor twists and turns will keep you adequately invested.
Musically, the film doesn't have much to offer obviously because of its serious subject but the two hit songs have been somehow accommodated without sacrificing the pace. However, composer Amit Trivedi more than makes up for the music in background score, which is just right to build enough tension and anticipation.
Riteish Shah's dialogues too are well balanced - neither too filmy nor too monotonous.
And finally, it's the smart direction of Raj Kumar Gupta that cohesively brings all of this together. After directing highly urban stories such as Aamir', No One Killed Jessica' and Ghanchakkar', Gupta is refreshingly brilliant in directing a rustic political plot highlighting the historic feats of the unsung heroes of India's Income Tax department.
Raid' has flavours of Neeraj Pandey/Prakash Jha brand of cinema but dare I say, this one is better than a few of their last films.
My tax-free advice raid the theatres at the earliest with your family in tow. This is value for money.
I am going with 4 stars (VAT included;)
