He definitely was but in a sense that he was the only one willing to take a risk with edgy movies that were sitting on the fence of parallel and commercial cinema. He suddenly started losing roles when all the mainstream actors wanted the edgier parts (eg Ranbir's wake up sid type roles would have gone to him if it weren't for Ranbir). He nearly lost his Zindagi Na milegi dobara role and only kept it because both Ranbir and Imran dropped out from it.
