People who appreciate more subtlety were raving about Deepika's performance and to a certain extent Shahid and they found Ranveer a lot OTT. Sharing a review from Rubina Khan

Personally I am not s fan of SLB movies. I find it too ott. Was hoping that he would have toned it down but looks like he has gone overboard in this

You have a point.. Even I was worried about how Khilji will be perceived it was a big risk, could've gone either way... Glad it is being appreciated.

I think in the first dialogue promo he was loud since he was giving out instructions to his men.

In the latest promo he says a dialogue and that's with a lot of control.

I am glad all 3 are getting praised for their performance 😃 .

Padmaavat Pushed Me To Be As Good As The Frame: Jim Sarbh

  • Entertainment Htcity
  • Updated: January 24, 2018 05:48 IST
  • Authors:
  • HT City Editorial Team

For Jim Sarbh, who has been attracting positive reviews for his portrayal as a slave-general of Alauddin Khilji in Padmaavat, says working with a nuanced director like Sanjay Leela Bhansali who pays attention to detail, gave him an opportunity to try and be as good as the grand and beautiful frames in the film.

A theatre actor and a director himself, Sarbh, who has worked in films like Neerja and A Death in the Gunj, and performed live in several plays including Kalki Koechlin's The Living Room and Rajat Kapoor's What is Done, is Done, says it's always an empowering experience to work with directors who are passionate about work.

Jim said, "In Padmaavat, you are pushed to be as good as the frame, to have a presence that lives up to the grand, operatic, intricate, beautiful frame that you inhabit. I love trying to rise to that. I heard that Sanjay Leela Bhansali has an eye for detail, and it shows in his work, but seeing it first hand is a powerful experience.

"I feel so grateful to have worked with someone who so deeply cares about his film, about every single element in his frame. For me, that is the most important thing, everything else falls by the wayside. If I see that everything the director does is motivated by trying to achieve the best, I can accept anything. I can try to do anything you want. I am immediately, passionately, on your team, he added.

Besides Padmaavat, Jim will also be seen in Aditya Vikram Sengupta directorial Jonaki, a Bengali film, where he will be essaying the role of a lover of an 80-year-old woman, who goes into coma and recounts her time with him in her younger days.

On essaying two roles which are "diametrically different, Jim said even the genres are poles apart. However, he said the common factor is two passionate filmmakers. "Jonaki is a dreamscape: it's slow, it's not restricted to what the actor brings. Padmaavat is an operatic, period, blockbuster. What I liked about both of these filmmakers is that they care deeply about the frame, said Jim.

Drawing a comparison, the 30-year-old said that in Padmaavat, he was constantly striving to make his performance more complicated. "What layers can I add, what subtext can I bring to life. Whereas in Jonaki, I was constantly trying to strip away and make things simpler. In Jonaki, it isn't about the individual actor. The actor is as important as the wall, or the water flowing down the wall, or a shadow. That kind of acting is also fascinating to me, not to be invisible necessarily, but to be in perfect synchronicity with the environment.

"It isn't as pleasurable to my ego, but it is interesting to try to blend into a mood, be a part of a painting, rather than standing out, he said.

Not happy about being questioned about his character in Padmaavat, Jim asked: "Why would you want my perspective on something not out yet.

The actor believes "work should speak for itself. "Why watch a film with my thoughts on what I was trying to achieve already in your head, as opposed to going to the film, watching it, receiving my performance with fresh eyes, and then questioning me afterwards?

No matter what the final outcome will be...
Nobody can ever take away from Deepika and Ranveer that they worked with SLB in three films back to back. This kind of trust is amazing. BM and Padmavati were SLB dream projects and for both he selected Deepika and Ranveer...And all three film were big budget films and two of them were successful. We only need to wait for the outcome of the third movie...
I am thankful as a fan that both my favourites did get this amazing chance by SLB to act in his films...Historical Films are once in a life time thing and both of them had the luck to act in two of them...
I might not know much about Bollywood and the happenings there but I do know that so many fan groups are wishing for the chance that their favs will one day have the chance to be lead in a SLB movie...and we were lucky three times.

I have a soft corner for Shahid and I hope Padmavati will do wonders for him and that for all three of them that Padmavati will be another feather in their hat.

Thank you everyone who regularly updated about this movie on this forum. I know how difficult it was with all the haters on this forum but also with all the negative news in the media.

THANK YOU!

Yes a role in a historical which is well made is a dream for every actor. you get to protray larger than life characters. experience a different era and also challenge themselves as actors to be portraying characters with the right accent mannerisms etc..

I would want my favourites to work with SLB again. But for now. Lets hope the sena stops their drama and that people can watch the film in theatres.

The team deserves a big bo success..
