I think you really have to be in that headspace / in the same situation as Ranbir was in to really understand / like Tamasha. That's why I really related to it when I watched it - I was in a very similar situation in which I was doing something I didn't really want to pursue as a career despite strong push from my parents etc., and the unhappiness you feel when you are stuck doing something you don't really want to do - along with the pressure you're getting from your loved ones - is what Imtiaz was trying to go with here.
Of course the movie was not fault less - it had some major issues, such as a random first half in Corsica, a very clumsily wrapped up climax (like Imtiaz, I also liked the scene where Ranbir recounts his 'robotic' experience to his parents and Dadi, but he just kind of tried to wrap it all up with Ranbir's dad 'forgiving' him very abruptly), the whole bipolarness of Ranbir's character was also not done well - but both Ranbir and Deepika did a great job. I enjoyed Deepika's portrayal of Tara especially because she was very subtle, and the way she emoted in 2 scenes - before Agar Tum Saath Ho scene and a deleted scene online in which she visits Ranbir at his flat. I'll also mention the music here, Safarnama and Agar Tum Saath Ho are songs I still listen to and enjoy.
