Scroll.in - Bhoomi' film review: Your regular rape-revenge drama only much louder

Omung Kumar's new movie wants to make an impact of the earth-shattering, heart-piercing and tear-inducing kind. Without wasting any time, Bhoomi gets into the mood in the opening sequence a woman is dragged screaming into a car as the background music shoots into the stratosphere.

A flashback reveals the identity of the woman after whom the movie is named and her beloved father Arun, a shoe salesman in Agra, who is not to be confused with the other shoe salesman from Agra, the one from Garm Hava (1973). Bhoomi (Aditi Rao Hydari), a wedding planner on the eve of her own wedding, dotes on her widowed father (Sanjay Dutt). Numerous scenes establish their bond and provide the backdrop for Arun's transformation into a vigilante after Bhoomi is abducted and gang-raped by three men, including Bhoomi's pursuer (Puru Chibber) and his monstrous cousin Dhauli (Sharad Kelkar).

As rape-revenge dramas go, Bhoomi treads over well-worn territory, and not because the movie is supposedly drawn from real-life incidents. Bhoomi is your regular rape-revenge drama, but only much louder, with better camerawork and production design. Kumar, who has previously directed Mary Kom (2014) and Sarbjit (2016), doesn't let go of the opportunity to throw in splashes of colour to enliven exceedingly familiar moments, including a climax bathed in red-coloured powder and turmeric-yellow fabric. As Bhoomi's groom-to-be (Sidhant) abandons her, court proceedings turn into an excuse for character assassination, and the neighbourhood turns against her and her father, there is always a nice piece of fabric or a colour-coordinated prop to elevate the movie above other more sordid fare.

Bhoomi makes a lot of noise about gender justice and women's rights, but it also creates a spot for an item song featuring Sunny Leone. While torturing one of the perpetrators, Arun approvingly lists countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iran as role models for dealing with rapists, with death presented as the only form of punishment for rape. Like the July release Mom and numerous other films of its kind, Bhoomi cannot even dream of allowing the victim with the opportunity to deal with the rape on her own terms or suggest that she can start a new life. Among the better scenes is a father-daughter conversation in which Bhoomi appears to be overcoming her sanctioned victim status, but since revenge is on the menu, it is duly served soon after.

The movie is named after the heroine, but it never forgets who is driving the story. Sanjay Dutt, in his first film since his release from prison, gets the chance to flex muscle and invoke memories of his tough man persona in the extended ultraviolent climax. The actor, who is playing his age, is far more effective and affecting as the wounded father than Rao Hydari's permanently stricken victim. Sharad Kelkar makes for a suitably evil old-school villain, and has numerous pieces of dialogue that underline his dastardliness in thick black ink.

Although the idea that death is the only punishment for rapists is as objectionable as they come, Dutt carries his scenes through with convincing righteousness and menace. He is barely believable as a shoe salesman, but delivers the goods while dealing with Dhauli and his posse. As the vendetta fantasy reaches its foregone conclusion, the one who makes the greatest impact isn't the victim but the one who takes revenge on her behalf.

Decent film.
Omung kumar has always been mediocre director and it shows here too.
Biggest problem is bollywood have already better made mom this year on the same topic.
Aditi, shekar were good , kelkar was ok in the cliched role.
I liked the way revenge was done on couple of guys.
Sanjay carries the movie on his shoulder.
Made me excited what he do in future.
Hopefully he dont restrict himself in any genre and work with better directors.

Watched it last night. Review may contain spoilers. The first half was really dark for me , there were scenes I literally closed my eyes . Aditi is beautiful but does not look like Sanjay dutt s daughter . There is a scene where Aditi and Sanjay Dutt join their hands and ask forgiveness from the rapists I hated the scene . Just feel disgusted and it s a very wrong social message. The movie picks up when it takes a turn and another rapist is revealed . From then it's fast paced and I had no issues rooting for the protagonists to murder each and every accused . The guy who bhoomi was supposed to ma rry looks insipid . Sharad kelkar plays the villian brilliantly . 2 out of 5 from my side for the intolerable first half.

Hrithik Roshan's Kaabil to Sanjay Dutt's Bhoomi: What went wrong with revenge dramas this year?

All the revenge dramas that released this year had strikingly similar storylines and most failed to leave a lasting impression on the audience.

New Delhi, September 26, 2017 | UPDATED 15:15 IST
A +A -
Hrithik Roshan in Kaabil

Revenge dramas are not new to Bollywood. Let's remind ourselves of Dushman (1998), whereKajol avenged her sister's death and rape, Anjaam (1994), a powerful and disturbing film where Madhuri Dixit is stalked by Shah Rukh Khanwho murders her entire family, and Baazigar (1993), where Shah Rukh marries into the family that destroyed his home.

These films will always be etched in our minds, owing to the acting, screenplay and dialogues. This year, Bollywood seemed to be milking the revenge drama genre again, and if films like Kaabil, Mom, Maatr and Bhoomi are anything to go by, they were more preferred than the romantic love stories.

The makers hoped that these films would shake up the audience and create the same impact. However, this hasn't worked out too well in most cases, as these films had repeated tropes and strikingly similar storylines. In essence, the audience could predict the route the story would take, and in some cases, even it's dialogues. Though Bollywood strove for the concept of women empowerment to resonate with the masses, this resulted in mixed to negative reviews.

THE SUBJECT OF RAPE

All the 2017 films Kaabil,Maatr, Mom and Bhoomi have dealt with the subject of rape, in an extremely similar way. In most, the victims are shown to be weak and helpless. Consider Aditi Rao Hydari's character in Bhoomi, or Yami Gautam's in Kaabil, who actually commits suicide as she feels that her husband doesn't love her anymore.

Ironically, Kaabil created the maximum impact, as it was the first of its genre to release this year. Though the film received flak for depicting the all-too-familiar trope of the man rising to the occasion (in this case Hrithik Roshan), and avenging his dead wife's (Yami Gautam) rape, the film was a success at the box-office.

However, as the rest of the films followed suit, the audience got tired of seeing the same subject dealt with over and over again in the same fashion. Mom and Maatr released within weeks of each other, and both dealt with mothers taking revenge for their daughters' rapes. So just a suggestion, if there is another story on a rape, can we now have the victim fighting back?

AVENGING PARENTS

Bollywood overused this trope, as there were three films which dealt with vengeful parents, Maatr, Mom and Bhoomi. And, in all three, the parents take law into their own hands and go and torture the culprits, in a gruesome and terrifying way, till they confess their crimes. In this context, Sridevi in Mom fared slightly better than the other two, as she brought a certain finesse to her character.

While Raveena Tandon emoted well as the raging mother in Maatr, she wasn't backed with good screenplay, and her dialogues, aimed to promote woman empowerment, fell rather flat. In the case of Bhoomi,Sanjay Dutt did well as the bloodthirsty father who wants to avenge his daughter's rape. However, the film stayed in the comfort zone of a '90s masala film and became another run-of-the-mill revenge saga.

INEFFICIENT POLICE

Yes, we get it, the police machinery is corrupt, so the ordinary citizens must take law into their own hands. Of course, there is victim-shaming in matters of rapes, but it is done in such a way that the audience can literally predict the dialogues, and they are things that we've heard before in several films. It also feels as if the makers are forcing the viewers to feel sympathy for the victim.

FORMULAIC STORIES

The storyline is predictable: a girl is raped, the police won't help, and so her benefactor takes up arms for her, while she is kept away from such confrontation. For a good revenge story, it's not just blood, gore and sensationalism that attracts the audience. For a film to work, it needs acting, a cogent storyline and screenplay to go with it, and preferably something that hasn't been done several times before. So maybe we're looking for tighter stories, crisper acting, and more varying reasons for revenge in the next drama that comes along?
