Raj Kummar Rao and Anjali Patil starrer political satire Newton, which had its world premiere at the 67th Berlin Film Festival , has won the International Federation of Art Cinemas (CICAE) award in its Forum segment. Rao shared the news on Twitter by congratulating the entire team of the Amit Masurkar-directed movie.

"So happy to share Newton' has won the Art Cinema award for the Forum section at Berlinale. Congratulations team. The movie, which also stars Pankaj Tripathi, revolves around the story of a rookie clerk on election duty in a conflict-ridden jungle of Central India, who tries his best to conduct free and fair voting.

The director, who rose to fame after helming 2014 film Sulemani Keeda, earlier told PTI he believes that only Rao could have done justice to the character. "I thought of Raj Kummar because the character was somebody, for which I needed a person, who could pull off a huge range. Plus I needed an actor of his age. The amount of the energy he could send to the role I couldn't think of anybody else.

Newton Movie Review

What's Good: Honesty for being what it is, an unexplored idea waiting to be told, it would be blasphemy if I didn't include Rajkummar Rao & Pankaj Tripathi in this section.

What's Bad: Pace plays the villain at times, if only it could've said few more things.

Loo Break: 3 times! Before & after the film, during the interval.

Watch or Not?: It has a documentary feel to it, watch it keeping your expectations in check. The duo of Rajkummar & Tripathi will keep you hooked.

Nutan Kumar, struggling with his name changes to Newton he's the replica of how a perfect man should be. Honestly, punctuality, work-is-worship are few of his primary traits. The film is set in Konar, Chhattisgarh which is affected my Maoists & Naxalites. When a polling officer denies going for voting in that area, Nutan Kumar aka Newton (Rajkummar Rao) is appointed as a presiding officer to fulfill his duties.

A place having a vote count of 76 people has military support of a team led by Atma Singh (Pankaj Tripathi). Atma helps Newton to reach till the voting booth but what happens next is everything the movie is about. The movie is carried forward showing the point of view of military, villagers & Newton. How everyone is right at their place still how they are trapped in situations no one has control on.

Newton Movie Review

Newton Review: Script Analysis

When after a working weekend, your Monday starts at 5 am working the whole day you see a film at 8 pm and still that movie manages to touch & move you, there you know that the film is a winner (at least in your heart). Newton is a day's story trying to explain something which takes years to execute. Amassing champions like Rajkummar Rao & Pankaj Tripathi in lead roles, Sanjay Mishra in supporting stellar performances are guaranteed. Some will definitely feel a film like this should be watched on a laptop or television, but for me, this is a film which should be watched on a big screen to motivate the makers to produce more of such films.

This film is niche, festival-kind, in-your-face but in the end, it's an honest attempt to explain a good thing without being preachy. Once a great man was asked, "What happens when you live without good movies? He smiled & replied, "You get poorer. Films like Newton are keeping us from getting poorer. Halfway through the film you'll feel lost among the crawly pace of the film, but, don't lose hope 2nd half has a lot in store for you. Also, the director has used a lot of symbolism in the film which may not be understood by everyone. But if you read this review before watching the film, watch out for how the blackboard in the school is always empty to symbolize the sad state of education in these dense villages, how the polling booth cardboard is chucked on a ground after a sequence to show how elections in such areas are unseated.

Newton Review: Star Performance

This is not new for Rajkummar Rao, topping the cast with her stupendous performance is what he has been doing since his first film. Each dialogue he says, each stare he gives, each smile he smiles has only one thing written on it honesty. Newton is about an honest man fulfilling his responsibilities to the core ain't Rajkummar Rao the perfect choice?

Pankaj Tripathi is as equally important as Rajkummar Rao. He overshadows Rajkummar Rao at many places, yes you heard it right! Every single time both of them have a conversation, it's hard to root for any one of them. He manages the control of the film even during the slow pace. Anjali Patil who plays the role of the Booth Level Officer with the team is the sweetest part of the film. Playing the role of a local, speaking Gondi language, Anjali manages to shine in a film which is full of talent.

The entire supporting cast is one another reason to watch this film. From officers helping Rajkummar Rao to the military people under Pankaj Tripathi, even each of the villagers everyone is top at their game. Special mention, Raghubir Yadav, this man enjoys the best punchlines of the film. He infuses humour every time he's on screen.

Newton Review: Direction, Music

Amit V Masurkar, who has previously directed an another Indie film called Sulemani Keeda (Which, by the way, also I liked). With Newton, he has done something extraordinary, he has achieved a feat which isn't achieved by many even after staying in the industry for years. Using symbolism, covering child marriage, dowry, election's malfunctions in the duration of 106 minutes is not something we see regularly in Bollywood. From card tricks to Pankaj Tripathi explaining BODMAS to our hero Rajkummar Rao, Amit has designed many of such wonderful moments in the film. Because of explaining the situation of villagers so clearly, the second half of the film catapults to another level.

There was no song in the film until an important sequence. Panchi Ud Gaya (It isn't out yet) is the song which will redefine your thinking for the film. Amazingly written by Varun Grover, the only song of the film becomes the highlight of it. Music by Naren Chandavarkar, Benedict Taylor, and Rachita Arora has not much role to play in the first half but is well used in second.

Newton Review: The Last Word

I'm watching this movie again, just to show my support for such films, and witness the magical duo of Rajkummar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi once again. You'll not get an item song, seeti-maar dialogues or hero beating ten goons kind of situations in this film, but what will you get is a pure & innocent film trying to explain something.

Three stars!

Movie Review: Newton Is Never Cynical Despite Its Tough Questions

You don't have to shout to be heard and Amit V Masurkar's Newton tells us exactly that. For a film that has a poignant message one that is the need of the hour for social media activists and armchair cynics alike no diatribes against the present establishment or long speeches beseeching us to do the right thing are employed.

Instead, it puts its money where its words are, and does the one job at hand to the best of its abilities giving us a compelling 106-minute-long film, that will stay with us long after we have stepped out of the theatre.

Newton', the eponymous hero of the film played by Rajkummar Rao, is a stickler for punctuality and rules, a fact established right at the beginning.

This trait is seen in snippets of his personal life, for instance, when he refuses to marry an underage girl, or the fearless pursuit of his duty as the Presiding Officer for the elections to be held in a Naxal-ravaged area. It's here that we meet his nemesis, Aatma Singh (essayed by Pankaj Tripathi), a police officer assigned the task of protecting the election team.

Rajkummar Rao (left) and Pankaj Tripathi (right) in Newton. (Photo Courtesy: Twitter Screen grab / Altaaf A Shaikh)

Aatma Singh is well-meaning, but one who knows which side of the bread is buttered and who must control the gun's trigger. Their interactions are the crux of the film. Both Rao and Tripathi are such supremely consummate actors that from the smallest of gestures and actions, they portray a burst of emotions .

There is also Raghubir Yadav (Loknath), Anjali Patil (as the adivasi school teacher Mako) and a special appearance by the always delightful Sanjay Mishra, who give their vociferous support to the film.

Of Inclusivity & Humanity

But in spite of the genius performances, it's the screenplay by Amit V Masurkar and Mayank Tiwari that give us a compelling piece of cinema. It is a film that raises pertinent questions about India and its democratic processes, and gives us insight into how we easily make adivasis the insentient "other".

Newton explores how the rights of adivasis are usurped by a State that is ill-equipped to even talk to them, and how this one-sided communication further alienates them. At times, it makes us question the democratic ideals on which our country was founded pressurising locals to cast their vote is no different from trying to bait a fish.

But, in spite of the uncomfortable questions it raises, the film never becomes cynical. The message of inclusiveness and humanity is not lost.

Newton and Aatma are at two ends of the spectrum. The latter's casual lack of concern for procedure and his general insouciance is in stark contrast to Newton's zealous commitment to duty. There are a number of humorous, ironic, satirical scenes, cleverly included.

The takeaway is as simple as the song that comes with the end credits Chal tu apna kaam kar to do the right thing and to do it with singular passion.

There is almost a faint reassurance that it's these odd, good-to-a-fault, idiosyncratic "Newtons that keep the spirit of our nation alive.

Despite no concession to mainstream contrivances, Newton is an entertaining and evocative watch.

Verdict: 4.5 Quints out of 5

NEWTON Movie Review: A stark, dark & witty gem

Director : Amit V Masurkar
Music : Tapad Telia

Starring : Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Anjali Patil, Raghuvir Yadav and Sanjay Mishra

Newton Review By Vishal Verma, Glamsham Editorial
Send to Friend

A cinema for the people, by the people and of the people of India who care to dare and take the stark, dark route in presenting a metaphoric mockery of the election process in the circus of democracy observed in the naxal dominated area of the heavily forested state of Chhattisgarh.

NEWTON MOVIE STILLS
NEWTON MOVIE STILLS

NEWTON starring national award winning actor Rajkummar Rao and helmed by the 2013 slacker-comedy SULEMANI KEEDA fame Amit Masurkar, NEWTON is a stark, dark & witty lift for the helmer and a smart, pitch-black & deliriously amusing leap for Eros and Colour Yellow in unmistakably ringing the bell of truth away from the shine of escapisms offered by the accepted wine of 'entertainment'.

Destined to please, amuse and enthrall the souls who constantly yearn for quality and art in cinema, the Indian sensation at the 2017 Berlin that bagged the international Federation of Art Cinemas (CICAE) award in its Forum segment, NEWTON is a unique experience. It doesn't promise to blow you away like FOUR LIONS or WAG THE DOG, it rather prefers to stay with you for quite some time so that the viewer can ponder on the stark and dark realities of voting in certain parts of India and foster on the humour, wit it offered during the process. The smartly written script by Amit Masurkar and Mayank Tewari brilliantly finds humour in the feeble stage of democracy witnessed in the jungles of Chhattisgarh, it's tough to extract humour from such situation of chaos and keep it engaging throughout, Amit Masurkar and Mayank Tewari achieve this rare feat with honesty.

Newton (Rajkummar Rao) changed from the original Nutan Kumar, is a science graduate. Born idealistic, Newton wants to see the change like many of us. Working as a government employee, Newton is not perturbed by the recent naxal attack in his region. He wants answers and is not convinced by the reply given by senior election officer (Sanjay Mishra in a cameo) on what should be done if the naxals keep on attacking the booth again and again during the training, as the state is observing an election. Kept initially as a reserve, Newton gets the assignment as the presiding election officer in naxalite infected village as the officer on duty makes an excuse and is unwilling to head towards the troubled region to conduct election. Newton takes the charge and he has to conduct a 'free and fair' polling for around 76 voters in the area surrounded by jungles, fear and insurgency. An experienced polling official Loknath (Raghubir Yadav), the local liaison Malko (Anjali Patil) and a picture of 'reality' in leader of the security forces Aatma Singh (Pankaj Tripathi) join in as Newton's company. As the day of the voting rolls, Newton struggle begins right from the early hours of morning till the scheduled end time of voting - 3:00 p.m. How Newton manages to survive the reactions to his actions in the movie which is symbolically based on Newton's third law of motion is the crux of the movie.

Director Amit Masurkar graduates from a slacker-comedy to the more challenging terrain of a black comedy with political overtones. The inevitable danger to become preachy is brilliantly ducked by the director in smartly engaging the viewers with constant conflicts of Newton that invariably adds layers to his persona in a pleasingly humourous ways. The rejection of marriage, the introduction of Aatma Singh, Loknath etc gives the helmer the chance to take side and remarkably while doing so Amit also convincingly brings the contradictions from time-to-time and concludes with an open end making the audience harp on their choices they made during its 206 minutes run time.

Coming to the performances, Rajkummar Rao is in his known zone after adding brilliant shades of colour, innocence and street smart flamboyance in BAREILLY KI BARFI. Here the actor is unmistakably at his best. The constant blinking of his eyes or the sheer lack of excitement portrayed when Anjali Patil shares some interesting local gyan, Rajkummar Rao makes his character come amusingly alive on screen in a flawless act. The actor is on a roll this year for sure - TRAPPED, BAREILLY KI BARFI but the role in NEWTON is the actor's best shot for top awards.

Pankaj Tripathi in one word is amusingly terrific. An all the way winning act by the gifted actor helps in the desired contrast required in the contradictions of NEWTON.

Anjali Patil is a fabulous talent and was last seen in the low budget decent thriller SAMEER. The wonderful actress who made her mark in Prakash Jha's CHAKRAVYUH based on naxal insurgency, NEWTON is a testimony that Anjali should be seen more on screen.

Raghubir Yadav is excellent and quite amusing. Sanjay Mishra showcases his brilliance.

Technically a splendid job as well with good productions values. Swapnil S Sonawane's cinematography captures the atmosphere and the jungle in telling tones. Shweta Venkat's editing and Angelica Monica's production designing is perfect. Naren Chandavarkar and Benedict Taylor's music adds to the flavor.

The minus point of the film is its inability to please the typical entertainment hungry souls of Bollywood with action, item songs etc.

All said and done, NEWTON is a stark, dark, witty and symbolic gem presenting the mockery of democracy observed in certain parts of India. Powered by unbeatable performances and constantly amusing humour. NEWTON is a cinematic action on screen that deserves favorable reaction from the concerning and thinking audience. A must for those who yearn for quality and art in cinema.

Newton Movie Review: Voting For Revolution

Directed by Amit Masurkar, the film explores the happenings of a single election day when a newbie government clerk played by Rajkummar Rao presides over a voting process in a naxal-infested area of Chattisgarh

FC Rating

Director: Amit Masurkar

Cast: Rajkummar Rao, Raghuvir Yadav, Pankaj Tripathi, Anjali Patil, Sanjai Mishra

A young government clerk becomes the presiding officer of the voting process on Election Day in a dangerous naxal-infested jungle area of Chattisgarh. He is a newbie, and understandably excited about this responsibility. Never mind that he, along with his small team, will be dispatched by helicopter to record a princely total of 76 votes from two remote villages. They will have military protection. They will wear bulletproof vests. Nobody really expects them to do this hazardous job. Proxy signatures are fine no point actually sitting through the lectures. But this chap wants all of those 76 voters. He is determined not because he is fresh and keen to impress, but because he is who he is.

ALSO READ: 5 FAVOURITE RAJKUMMAR RAO MOMENTS ON-SCREEN

Perhaps the biggest victory of Amit Masurkar's Newton is the fact that its stubbornly honest and eponymous protagonist (Rajkummar Rao) feels unreal. Like a curious misfit: the types that prompt onlookers to incredulously ask if he is new ("naye ho kya?) or drunk ("peekay ho kya?). In this sense, he is a natural descendent of Rajkumar Hirani's wide-eyed alien, PK an anomaly that has accidentally been dropped into our contradictory planet from the stars above. This is evident from Newton's interactions with the people around him. From his jaded team members (a rakishly excellent Raghuvir Yadav; finally rises above his horrific B-movie spree) to the cynical security chief (the incomparable Pankaj Tripathi), everyone at some point goes from bemused to exasperated with his procedural-junkie ways. He's some sample.

Basically, Newton Kumar is an annoying person. The class-monitor, complain-to-principal brand of annoying. And Masurkar's superbly acted film gradually makes us realize that this country's greatest tragedy is that we find someone like him so annoying.

In fact, like PK, Newton too has an unvoluntary "eye tic of sorts; his blinks are forceful and sleep-deprived, as if he were alertly trying to process the vagaries of this world every time he opens them. Except, he isn't an inventive narrative device. He is a mirror, yes, but one that is capable of breaking by reflecting the blinding inadequacies of a broken system. He is real, human to a fault, and has polished the apple that fell on his head and offered it to many, many teachers.

Basically, Newton Kumar who has intellectually rechristened himself after disowning his effeminate original name, Nutan is an annoying person. The class-monitor, complain-to-principal brand of annoying. And Masurkar's superbly acted film gradually makes us realize that this country's greatest tragedy is that we find someone like him so annoying.

Honesty is a virtue equally bashed and celebrated today, when it should simply be accepted. And what makes Newton such an interesting everyman is that he is aware of this, and wears his ethicality as a badge. He wouldn't mind getting an award for it. Early on, during a workshop on the eve of the Lok Sabha elections, a senior trainer (Sanjai Mishra) accurately dissects this conscious sincerity of Newton. "Your problem is that you are proud of your honesty, the older man tells Newton. In a way, he is somewhat equating Newton to the nation he occupies proudly and loudly labeling itself the "largest democracy in the world when it is merely doing its job. Duty is misconstrued as choice. Both character and country come under fire through Masurkar's restrained vision.

Though there is nothing connecting this thematically to Amit Masurkar's barefooted slacker-comedy "Versova debut (Sulemaani Keeda), Newton Kumar much like the director, who has written commercially soul-crushing titles like Murder 3 is made to feel like a righteous indie stuck in an atmosphere full of tired mainstream temperaments. They probably mock Newton behind his back, but remain wary of his inherent basicness. There were times I wanted to take Newton to the side and ask him who his mentors have been. How has he turned out this way? How has he maintained his principles? Is it even possible? What is his agenda? The more difficult he is to fathom, the more successful his story becomes.

The only time the film decides to become obvious about its "message is when the media materializes to report on the process. It is a powerful scene, aided by the contrast of a lilting acoustic song that makes it seem like the images (and image-building) are playing in front of Newton in slow motion.

Not every action in the film is met with an instant reaction and there's a beauty to the fact that it paints such a broad, uncomplicated picture merely through the happenings of a single day, through a bunch of people wryly putting the "demo in democracy. The film, unlike its "hero, isn't showy about this idealism. It invests into the mundaneness of its situation instead fashioning some lovely idle banter (especially Yadav and his writer-ly anecdotes) and reluctant chemistry between Newton and these middle-of-nowhere faces.

I can't get enough of Pankaj Tripathi (as supervising officer Aatma Singh) and Rajkummar Rao in the same frame. Together they have owned 2017 with their craft, much of which is visible here in their amusing battle of worldviews. We are cinematically conditioned to expect one of them to affect the other, or perhaps Tripathi to grudgingly admire the young upstart, but every character is too self-made to embrace conventional storytelling patterns. The film also quietly invests into the region's politics; the troubled locals soon sound like forcibly herded pawns torn between the communist rebels and military forces. They speak, complain and comment in a "documentary manner. When asked if she is a pessimist like her male colleagues, Malko (Anjali Patil; fiercely dignified), a local well aware of their mission's futility, simply replies that she is an Adivasi.

ALSO READ - I CRAVE ROLES THAT KEEP ME UP AT NIGHT: PANKAJ TRIPATHI

As should be the case with a story revolving around an empty election center, there are many scenes in which boredom becomes a character. It even gets a soundtrack of sorts with many shots of Newton's restless face while we hear cards being shuffled, books being read, chuckles of lazy soldiers in the background, stifled yawns and Singh's sardonic commentary on Newton's oddness ("Dekho, he is being all friendly, he suspiciously mutters at one point, when politely waved to from a distance). All this makes for a surprisingly watchable and socially subconscious character portrait.

Ironically, the only time the film decides to become obvious about its "message is when the media materializes to report on the process. It is a powerful scene, aided by the contrast of a lilting acoustic song that makes it seem like the images (and image-building) are playing in front of Newton in slow motion. It is both a circus and a movie, and Newton as we all know by now isn't very fond of entertainment. His functionality is disturbed. Rao's eyes here bear the muted shock of a child discovering that Santa Claus isn't just fake but also someone who gets paid for cradling children in festive malls.

ALSO WATCH: RAJKUMMAR RAO & HANSAL MEHTA INTERVIEW WITH ANUPAMA CHOPRA | OMERTA

It's a testament to Rao's sober performance that in spite of his character's blatant underdog-ness, he remains difficult to like. He could have easily bas***dized Newton into the village-idiot-simpleton caricature in order to earn our sympathy, but the film remains rooted to its interludes instead.

It's a damning measure of our times that Newton begins to feel more like a villain by the end. He isn't even equipped with a dramatic genre that might allow him to go around protesting, beating his chest, lighting candles or Rang-de-Basanti-ing a corrupt minister. But he has to come close. He has to effect change. Masurkar's brilliantly resigned film, however, keeps reminding him that he is not a film. "Rome cannot be built in a day, he is later told, cautiously, by a colleague closer to his age. Loosen up, we feel like telling him because this will never be Rome. And you we will always be Nutan.
