So who decides what is the truth? In the 1990s, it was prevalent that a married actor would have a discreet affair with the young heroine he was working with and expect the girl to show no emotion or sign of involvement. And if, God forbid, she did indicate any of those in a weak moment all hell would break loose.
She would lose her films with the co-star, not be spoken to by the hero and his camp, be removed from whatever movies she had with "his people.
A spate of threatening interviews from the hero would then follow, whereas the girl would be under pressure to keep quiet even as the hero would tarnish her name and reputation and in some interviews buttress his macho image by threatening to "break the girl's face if she spoke about him.
And this would be encouraged by some sycophantic journalists who would applaud and encourage the hero. Or in some cases, some infatuated woman journalist (i know a few) who would think the hero is God and add fuel to the fire, destroying the remaining amount of dignity the actress had left.
In this day and age it is much easier to reach out and present your own case. Social media has its pros and cons, but makes it much easier to put out the other side of the story .
Earlier one could rant and rave, crying oneself hoarse about the falsehood of whatever they had put out there. But once a scandalous headline was out, that was it there were few takers for any clarification.
Today Kangana Ranaut is the topic she has become a poster girl for feminists. I remember first seeing Kangana when she won the newcomers' award at an award show in London many years ago.
What really impressed me was that in her acceptance speech, she humbly stated that she would speak in Hindi as her English was not so good. That statement won the audience's heart.
I believe she is someone who will not shy away from the truth, and go to considerable lengths to argue her version of it. I think, like many others, that intimate details about a relationship needn't be made public, as what happens between two people is for them to know and decide. But it's her choice to stand up and fight if she feels she has been wronged.
I applaud her for the stand that she has taken, when most in her place would succumb to the pressure and back off. This girl has taken the bull by its horns, and whatever the outcome it might just change the trend in Bollywood of taking people for a ride.
