No the 90s and the 2000s did not have a monopoly. But there was a strong reason for it. That was when the singer used to be decided by the music directors and so the casting used to be as per who is better suited to a song. For eg. If chaiyya chaiyya had to be sung by Sukhwinder singh then it HAD to be sung by him. Because no other singer would be able to do justice to the song the way he would. That's why during those days ek singer ki chaap hoti thi. You hear so many cover versions of chaiyya chaiyya. But still Sukhwinders voice is imprinted for that song and you'll find no other singer justifies it as well as he. Doesn't mean that sonu can't sing the song or kk can't. The notes remain the same. But it will never sound as good in their voices. Same goes for tadap tadap ke. You can hear as many versions of that song as you want but you'll only hear kks voice. Same goes for kal ho na ho. Or abhi mujh mein kahin. But that doesn't go for arijits songs. He doesn't imprint these songs except for the sad and romantic love ballad. U can hear bulleya or ae dil hain mushkil in Amit Mishras voice and that still sounds magical. That's because the casting now a Das is done by the music company and not the music director. So since arijit is the current hit machine all songs are given to him whether they suit him or not. It doesn't mean he isn't a great singer. It just means that the kind of opportunity that the other singers should get, they aren't getting

Very true. It's almost like people are superstitious that if he doesn't sing , a song cannot be a hit. In a country of a billion people one man shouldn't be getting all the songs.

True, he is overused and wayyy too repetitive.. And also, his songs sometimes does not fit with certain actors, mostly SRK.. if it the music album, its ok, but being picturized on a scene in a movie, the voice of the singer should somehow, match, the voice of the actor to bring out the feel and the essence of that scene, or else it completely ruins it..

No. I'm not saying that sanam sang it better than arijit. I'm saying that when I hear it in Sanam's voice live this song still is as magical that I feel that if sanam would have sung it in studio he too would have done wonders to the song.

Kumar Sanu had complete Monopoly in the 90s, even Anu Malik used him a lot

AR Rehman mostly prefers Mohit Chauhan for his male voice compositions

Every music director has his favorite singer whom he repeatedly uses

Arijit might get saturated after a point, but as of now hes the monopoly

Pritam just had the chartbuster ADHM song with Arijit which won all the awards this year so he has total faith in Arijit to render his compositions

Are we forgetting Udit Narayan, are we forgetting SPB, are we forgetting Hariharan, are we forgetting sonu nigan, are we forgetting roop Kumar Rathod in the 90's?? These were just the famous ones. Coming to a r Rehman he uses everyone who is good. It's only in rockstar and maybe a couple of other songs that he has used Mohit Chauhan. But if u see his collection he has used SPB, Shankar Mahadevan, Hariharan, sonu nigam, javed Ali, Sukhwinder singh and Many others equally.
Some of Sonu Nigams biggest hits have been with Shankar Ehsaan loy. Doesn't mean they use him for every song. If you see an album like dil chahta hai there are two songs by Shaan, two songs by sonu and a variety of singers for koi kahe. My point is that every song need not be in arijits voice. And there can be other singers too who Pritam can use. Only then will we truly see how many talented singers are there in India.
