The truth is I am digressing. What I need to talk about is Ranbir and his recently acquired bubble head status.
Ranbir is not a star whom I normally associate with mental flatulence. Boring yes but not stupid. He is a kind of man who sounds really intelligent in the interview. His not so recent interview were so introspective that they forced me to take a closer look into his career. Now I have immense faith in his ability as actor. But his latest bouts on Neha No filter (and few others) were seriously W*F.
While other stars tried thier level best to use Neha No filter to take shot on their contemporaries, Ranbir threw few real gems - one of which was comparing Dutt movie to Wolf of Wall street. I sometime wonder, if like Alia, Ranbir likes to sign movies without reading the script. It also gives credence to voice of concern that says that Ranbir would have fewer flops if he knew more about his movie and not just his part.
Karan's ADHM has done course correction on Ranbir's career. It has pulled him out of Abyss (not of flop. Flop are part of industry. But from the flotsam of negativity that seemed to have surrounded Ranbir and had become part of him). This movie has put him back on path of super stardom. His next few movies will decide whether he will reach it or will he become another Shahid Kapoor.
When JJ releases next year, ADHM's new age Rahul role (more friend-zoned, slightly daft, utterly harmless and pukka BF material) will help bring Ranbir's newly found young fans to theater. JJ has got a huge boost from ADHM -from becoming just a movie releasing in 2017, it has now become one of the most anticipated movie releasing in 2017. But it will be Dutt and to some extent Dragon that will help him cement his relation with more mature fans. Dutt will be Ranbir's first real acid test.
Now Dutt's life story is well known but not much is known about Sanjay Dutt -the man behind the star. What is known is he was a star kid who had a dream debut and had lovely girl friend, loving parents and siblings. He worked with best of the industry in his second movie and was earmarked for super stardom. But was almost destroyed by some dark force residing within him.
He is a man who went into depth of hell and dragged his family with him, besmirched name and reputation of his parents, survived losing part of his lung. He finally kicked the habit of drugs that had hold on him to have all the trouble with law, was called anti-national- terrorist and had to serve time.
It is well known fact that Dutt adored his mother and it was her death that served as a point where his life spiraled out of control. That he had contentious relation with his father, but was anchored by sister and later by his wife's love. But it was his father who stood like a rock when Dutt needed him. Twice he lost people to cancer- his first wife and mother. He lost custody of his first child thanks to drugs. He cheated but was also cheated by the women in his life. He was known to be generous (but not so savvy) soul by people who knew him. He has helped great no. of people in his life (including now hugely popular but then future superstar). He has many well-wishers in the industry.
Now I am not under any illusion that this whole Dutt movie is anything more than PR exercise. Hirani and Chopra both need Dutt professionally and they also love him as friend. But even with all the white wash, there is enough dark material, enough twist and turn that is going to test Ranbir's ability as a performer. It is enough to salivate the actor in him.
Sanjay Dutt's story is not a story of man child. It is story of man fighting his own inner demons and who was almost consumed by them. It is story of man who knows great deal about betrayal, who knew loss at close hand, who has watched people turn their back on him when he needed them most. Dutt is Munnabai and Khalnayak rolled in one. And a survivor.
What tickles me is that Dutt will be played by a man whose grandfather was one half of famous duo. The other half was Dutt's own mother. And if certain Prithiviraj had not intervened, Nargis would have been Ranbir's step grandmother (I am not sure when Rishi was born) or grand mother. And based on 50-50% chances that Sanjay would be either Sunil or Nargis Dutt's son, Sanjay would have been Ranbir's real (or step) uncle. I think the chances that Raj Kapoor's grandson (and one who shares his real name Ranbir Raj Kapoor) should play Nargis Dutt's son was written in the star.
Hirani is just an instrument who is going to make it into reality
