I was born in India but raised in the US. I too have friends from every culture and region be it African and Hispanic and so I know how for many cultures other than desi a male is considered the heir. Does not mean it is right. Just because something is ancient and followed by many cultures does not make it right. if not, your and my ancestors if they ever landed in the US would be slaves, not free if Abe Lincoln had not recognized it as wrong and fought a civil war for human dignity for all.

It's awfully strange how he does not seem to bother about Agastya being his heir when he loves to portray how much he dotes & adores the women of the family eap his daughter & her daughter. His equation with Ash, I've always found very creepy. There isn't any other word for it, he has calmed down now publicly but my Hod, the first few years she seemed more his bride than his son's until he called her "Bahuraani." He definitely is huge on patriarchy & waaris so he gives off the this potent vibe of wanting a male heir.. In don't doubt his love & care for Aaradhya, but at the back of his mind it seems to rankle & fester, this fact of not having a "heir" from the real 'waaris' his illustrious family, Abhishek. It's never happening so he should just give up hope now (if he truly has any)

I don't believe any of this conveniently times BS that he regularly tries to dupe us with. He's just a refined patriarchal man wrapped up in Egoism & Sexism. He comes off as a badly-intentioned hypocrite in the garb of tradition & culture; ESP after the hell he put his wife through, it just makes you want to laugh & shut the proverbial door on his face. 😡

Oh yes, but I do not like his patriarchal tendencies but gosh, the buda is refined. From poetry to flowers to the handwritten notes to his dress and manners. Both western and Indian. Very refined and I like it too. 😆

Agastya is indeed not his heir.. Most people like the idea of having a grandson from their son and I don't really see anything wrong in the desire as long as it does not become overbearing which I don't think is the case here.. People really do underestimate Aish

I was born abroad and spent most of my life around caucasians too. Yes, they all want a heir and there is nothing wrong with it. But they understand that one does not have a control over it and take comfort in what they got. It isnt about a male or female child but having a grand child which is more important to them. They are OK regardless and let them be, something I don't seem to think Ab Sr. can come to peace with.

No one really knows what goes on in another person's brain but his general behavior and the strong patriarchal views he have its not very far off to assume him wanting a male grandchild who will be the name bearer of his clan/family. In the recent letter too he called Navya nanda family's heir/pride so it kinda gives away the fact that he do not consider shweta's kids as bachchan heirs no matter how much ever he loves em. What bothers me the most is his description of a new born aradhya where he implied the child to be a splitting image of Aishwarya including the eyes. Which turned out to be false. Aradhya is beautiful in her own way but she isn't the splitting image of her mom. That kid has so much stress already 😒 all in all IMO AB Sr is a shallow person.

+1. Male child is big deal even in NRI's. I know some health care professionals and they always gripe about how it is always south Asians who are super OCD about having a baby boy. In some parts of Canada early sex determination is not allowed so they actually pay out of pocket to cross the border into US to get it done at private clinic. Having a preference to have a male family heir is understanable but it becomes a moot point when there is no such option left and then women are stigmatised over it. This is deplorable.

The thing with thought like this is, if someone like ABSr who is educated and exposed to so much progressive thought is regressive in his ways and we take it as normal and not condemn, then how can we blame a villager in the heart of India, Africa, jungles of Peru who kills a baby girl because he considers her a burden ?
Before anyone ask, how do I know he is regressive, his letter to his grand daughters alone is an example.
