How many times have we complained when mediocre films have earned big bucks at the box-office? But, it's even more unfair when brilliant films that receive widespread critical acclaim, and even generate positive word-of-mouth, fail to perform well at the ticket window. Sometimes, it's difficult to lay a finger on the reason. Many a time, the fault lies with us for not turning up at the theaters and embracing such deserving films.
Thankfully, many of these masterpieces go on to achieve cult status in later years and are recognized for the classics they are. As a homage to such deserving classics that should've set the box-office on fire, we decided to have a throwback in their memory.
Swades
Widely regarded as one of Shah Rukh Khan's best movies and performances, Swades did not find much love among the audience upon its release, despite glowing reviews from almost every critic. However, in subsequent years, it would be virtually impossible to come across a person who doesnn't absolutely love this film.
Andaz Apna Apna
Yup, that's right, one of the most-loved comedies to hit Indian screens found very few takers back in 1994. What was the audience thinking back then? Your guess is as good as ours. However, better sense prevailed, and today Andaz Apna Apnanever fails to tickle everyone's funny bone regardless how many they watch it.

Lootera
One of the sadest stories at the Indian box-office is Lootera being flat-out rejected by moviegoers. Surely, it was never designed to be a blockbuster, but the dismal box-office performance of the film is baffling to say the least. Three years later,Lootera has gone down as one of Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha's finest films and performances.

Dil Se
Another SRK film that deserved way more moolah than it had raked in. The consensus is that moviegoers weren't ready for a film like Dil Se back then, and many couldn't come to terms with Shah Rukh playing a character so different to how he's usually portrayed on screen. Critics, however, were floored by his performance and Mani Ratnam's direction, and, today, the audience share their opinion.
Zakhm
One of Mahesh Bhatt's best films was also one of his least grossing ones. Zakhm sinking without a trace is probably one of the most unfortunate things to happen at the Indian box-office. The National Awards however had a different story to tell, with the film deservedly winning the honors for Best Actor and Best Film on national integration.
Lakshya
Arguably, Hrithik Roshan's best film along with Jodhaa Akbar, Dhoom 2, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. However, it hadn't met with the same success as those other films upon its release. Today, the audience swears byLakshya as one of the best war films produced in Indian cinema.
Khamoshi: The Musical
Besides its soul-stirring music, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's debut film also boasted amazing performances by Nana Patekar and Seema Biswas, plus a wonderful turnover by Salman Khan. For some reason, cinema lovers had stayed away from the theater. These days, however, Khamoshi is taken in the same breath as SLB's other magnum opuses.
Go Goa Gone
A unique concept never attempted before in Indian cinema, and executed brilliantly on screen. Perhaps, the audience had found the concept a bit too unique for their tastes. With Go Goa Gone having flopped, it'll be sometime before we get too see something as insanely beautiful as zombies in Indian cinema again.
Silsila
Many believe that Silsila's bold themes were too ahead of its times for the audience to accept. No such problems today as almost everyone you'll speak to absolutely love this film.
Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year
If there's one movie that perfectly depicted the life of a salesman and the cutthroat business associated with the profession, it was this film. It also boasted a marvelous performance from star Ranbir Kapoor and brilliant turnovers by the rest of the supporting cast, too. In later years, the audience has Rocket Singh the warmth it had deserved upon its release.
It's wonderful that these masterpieces have deservedly gone on to be regarded as classics.
