KJo & SLB are pretty over-rated, that said, there is no doubt they're damn good
Directors within their genres. It doesn't appeal to X,Y, Z human being ummm, sure, but that does not take away from their work within a certain genre of
Movies. KJo, has plenty of potential if only he would wean himself away from his limited film-making/redundant ideas. BT's short film should show anyone that the man, when he wishes to, can go beyond designer khaakra-huge chandelier routes.. I wouldn't call SLB over-rated per se, but he likes to operate within in a dream world replete with luxury & desi riches of all kinda & hence the story suffers. It's pure luxury to escape into one of his movies.

Over-rated for me is Anurag & Hirani if we are only talking about story. Hirani has that clever blend of commercialism + story so he covers both bases but frankly, PK was pretty over-rated & so was 3 Idiots! And IIRC, wasn't that inspired by Chetan Bhagat's book? If so, loool.

The best directors I would say are Motwane & Bharadwaj. Imtiaz before Tamasha which was just stupid despite the free-spirited message it wished to convey though RK was a pleasure to see onscreen. More of this & Rockstar & less of Roy & he can regain his position.

I've watched only LSD which was really good, yes, but I haven't watched any other movie of his to comment with certainty whether he makes my list or not. That said, ultimately movies are art, encr subjective, so it's arrogance I would say to comment on someone's tastes/opinions or not. There are enough in the world esp on this forum, who reckon themselves to be the Leonardo Da Vinci/Michaelangelo of Taste & Opinion. šŸ˜† šŸ˜†

P. S. Shakun Batra is so under-rated, seems to be a true story-teller & a real good director & can turn a cheesy, mundane genre like rom-coms into something fresh & cute (EKMAT) and can talk dysfunction with all the audience relatability, to make families seem imperfect , flawed yet loveable, real & cherishable.. Unless he pulls an Imtiaz, and after K & S, he's top on my list! āļø

For me Vishal Bhardwaj qualifies as the best by far.
Hirani is past his 'sell by' date even though he is hailed as great..

Most of them are pseudo intellectuals.. sometimes it is difficult to decipher what they are getting at. Imtiaz was good only in JWM .

I quite like Prakash Jha's movies specially the earlier ones before he turned to the bigger stars for greater publicity. Wish he had not.

Dibakar was good in KKG ...entertaining.

old films are mocked by young generation for being melodramtic but i find movies of SLB, KJO, Farah khan and all setting new bench marks of melo drama with more focus on visuals and all. i feel all of them are over rated and make commercial pot boilers.

I think most people...umm, don't know how to put this because I don't want to say anything about tastes...but let's just say most people who have seen his movies would and do rate him as one of the best directors of today. But those whom his movies don't reach, i.e. people who have seen pretty much none of the stuff you've mentioned in your post? Unfortunately, those are the masses. To be significantly rated as a big/best director, you need to have reach...that's how people start talking about you, expecting your movies, considering you as popular. Same is the case with lots of actors...they're heads and shoulders above others, but don't have similar viewership to gain appreciation and thus popularity while many average or non-actors get regularly mentioned or hailed by the masses.

For Dibakar though, I will say that many times, I have seen people on this forum wish for their favourites to work with him...which says enough. Him, Vishal Bhardwaj, and Motwane are some of the directors regularly mentioned in hopes of seeing 'quality work' and 'versatility' in actor portfolios.

As for why SLB, KJo, Imtiaz get more mileage than their work actually deserves...easy enough, no...people like looking at pretty things...wall hangings, curtains, clothes...šŸ˜† People like seeing flossy, glitzy, glamorous stuff. And Imtiaz...pretty sure he's just hanging around and lasting on the basis of a past, one-time glory.

true the amount of colours kjo put in KKHH
SLB and KJO usually opt for grand sets/ grand views to give the passing appearance of royalty
and ensure the colours in the frame look pretty

Dibakar is a fine director. Except for Shanghai, I enjoyed all his works. Even DBB is a good film with nice and crisp characterization of the protagonist except it gets tedious towards the climax. My favorites definitely are Khosla ka Ghosla followed by OLLO. KKG is such a superbly witty film, would love to see another movie by Dibakar in that genre.

Coming to KJo and SLB, the latter is ahead in terms of direction. Though KJo is just about fine at what he does, he is a pretty basic director. There's hardly anything to dwell upon in his films. They are mostly on the surface. I'm not a fan of SLB but in his films you have those frames which speak for themselves and he extracts superb performances from his actors. He hardly disappoints in that department. Keeping my personal bias aside, I can easily see why a lot of people enjoy his movies. The grandeur he builds, nobody else in the current lot of Bollywood does that.

I enjoyed watching KKG and OLLO. DBB was decent but it was a bit too much complex. It made for a one time watch. Overall, Dibakar Bannerjee is a good director but he doesn't have that visibility or popularity to be counted as one of the best. He has not worked with big names either. Small offbeat films do not appeal to everyone.

Agree, Dibakar is one of the better directors, I put him in top 5, Hirani is the best cos he can blend the mass with the class, his films get both - critical acclaim and box office success which is a rarity in bollywood. While Kjo, SLB are more like box offc stars. Dibakar so far has delivered in terms of praise from critics and thinking audience but has failed to deliver a big box offc success. If he can do that he'll have a wider reach and will be talked about more in terms of ratings.
I absolutely loved Khosla ka ghosla, one of the best movies of recent times, OLLO, DBB are good too, yet to watch LSD, and Emran, Abhay film forgot the name.
