Salman Khan's romantic drama Sultan opened so strongly in India on Wednesday that it could rank as the biggest of the Bollywood superstar's career, according to preliminary trade estimates. Produced by Yash Raj Films on a budget of 70 crore ($13 million), the film launched on 4,350 screens in India and day-and-date on 1,100 screens in 50 territories, including most of the major markets except China, where a deal is being negotiated.
The debuts in Australia, the U.K., and U.A.E. were similarly impressive. "So far the initial reactions from our exhibition partners are very positive as they have been adding screens given the high level of demand, so that's always a good sign," Avtar Panesar, YRF's Vice President - International Operations, tells FORBES.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh estimates the first-day takings in India at more than 40 crore ($6.01 million) and maybe as high as 43 crore ($6.4 million). That would mean a personal best for Khan, edging past Prem Ratan Dhan Payo's 40.35 crore ($6.06 million) debut last year.
The all-time opening day record is held by Happy New Year, the action comedy starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and Abhishek Bachchan, which collected 44.97 crore ($6.76 million) in 2014. The highest-grossing movie of Salman Khan's career,Bajrangi Bhaijaan, rang up 184.62 crore ($27.7 million) in its opening week a year ago, so Sultan has a good shot at beating that, helped by the Eid national holiday today.
Released by Mind Blowing Films in Australia, the film collected $A153,000 ($115,000) on only 29 screens on Wednesday, a personal best for Khan, beating Bajrangi Bhaijaan. According to Comscore's estimates the opening day figures were $273,000 on 85 screens in the U.K. and $371,000 on 19 in the U.A.E.
Analyst/critic Komal Nahta predicts Sultan will smash box-office records and could even turn out to the biggest ever blockbuster. Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, the film features Khan as Sultan Ali Khan, a 40-year-old former wrestler from Haryana. Flashbacks show he was running a cable business in a small village when he met and fell in love with Aarfa (Anushka Sharma), Haryana's most famous female wrestler. He trains to be a wrestler, they marry and he becomes world champion. But a tragedy drives his wife away and he decides to give up wrestling for good. Randeep Hooda plays Sultan's cynical coach, with Amit Sadh as a young entrepreneur whose dream of bringing Mixed MartialArts contests to India isn't working.
Indian critics have praised the film, echoing the acclaim from Bollywood filmmakers and stars who attended a special screening on Tuesday night. Nahta said, "Salman Khan is outstanding as the lover boy, the wrestler, the loving husband and the brooding man... Anushka Sharma shines as only few could."
Koimoi.com's Surabhi Redkar hailed Sultan as " a mixed bag of emotion, action, love and, of course, Salman Khan ." She found the plot clichd and pointed to "moments of outstretched realities," but concluded this is an "out-and-out commercial film."
