Imran wrecked his career himself. He's lazy and has no drive. He took the easy route by essentially doing romcoms (bad ones at that). Deepa Mehta wanted to cast him in Midnight's Children but he didn't take up her offer. The movie flopped but it could still have been good for him and make him more relevant on the artsy scene.
He loves money too much imo, the guy grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth but doesn't seem ready to decrease his salary even though he isn't bankable.
What really put an end to his career is the three flops he had in 2013 and the subsequent fall out with two biggies (Ekta and Karan) though they seem to have made up on a personnal level, I don't think they'll work together soon (especially since Imran isn't bankable).
Moreover, instead of doing more movies after his disastrous 2013 year, he chose to take a paternity leave to stay with his wife during the pregnancy (it's not as if he could help much as long as the baby was in the womb btw).
Regarding his acting skills, I think he's more than okay and that people tend to put him in a case (then it's his fault too because he lets himself be typecasted : out of 12 of his movies, 7 were romcoms and in the 5 others, in played a nice guy in at least 2 of them). He tried being versatile early on but it didn't work out (Luck, Kidnap) but both movies flopped then with MKBKM he was panned by the critics.
People loved his pairing with Sonam and though she wanted to work with him, he turned down those movies. What would it have cost him?
He worked again with Punit Malhotra because IHLS was a hit but the movie was soo bad! He set himself up for failure with GTPM and then went to blame Kjo regarding the way the movie was promoted. Same thing than with OUTIMD.
I looks as if he isn't motivated to have an acting career. People blast Sonam a lot because of her acting skills but at least she works and does movies she's passionate about ; Deepika used to be very bad but she has a drive that enabled her to because better... at least they were aware of their shortcomings and tried to work on it.
Imran? It's never his fault. The guy doesn't understand why KB flopped... the movie was horrid. How does he want the audience to connect with it?
That being said, I hope Aamir has a good script for his nephew (if the rumours about his producing a movie for Imran are true) and that Imran wakes up and get a good grip on his career.
