What kind of roles can Sanjay Dutt play after he returns to films next month?
Main Bhi Bachchan! He'd be perfect for Sr B kind of roles
Not too long ago, actors who stepped into their 60s had to make do with character roles, Amitabh Bachchan changed that. Roles are still being especially written for the septuagenarian. Whether he plays Sexy Sam or Sarkar, he is the protagonist.
If there's another actor who can come anywhere close to Bachchan it's Sanjay Dutt (who's in his late 50s) who has a wide repertoire of roles behind him. Be it positive, negative, action, comedy or romance, Sanjay has done it all. Here's why Sanju Baba can step into Bachchan-esque roles after his release from the prison. He can't play hero anymore but he can play Big B roles that have meat and suit his stature. Here's why...
Bhoothnath
Like Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt has his own following among the kids. Whether it was his Gandhigiri that became a big hit among kids and adults alike in Munnabhai MBBS or his hilarious scene with children as well as a toddler in Dhamaal, the actor has a good equation with the little ones on screen. Playing the ghost who is visible only to one boy should be a cakewalk for Sanjay who has good comic timing. He also has a unique chemistry with child stars " he treats them as equals and doesn't talk down to them which makes their banter entertaining. So, whether he has to scare the children or make them laugh, Sanjay should make for a good ghost.
Cheeni Kum
Sanjay had romanced the much younger Prachi Desai in Policegiri, but that one tanked. However, Cheeni Kum, a love story between a 64-year-old arrogant, ego-centric man and a charming woman half his age should suit Sanjay to the T. Simply because he will be playing his age. We have seen him playing a macho hero, but of late, he hasn't done a love story and this will be perfect for him.
Nishabd
Loosely based on American Beauty, this is a May-December romance where a father falls in love with his teenage daughter's best friend. Though the film directed by Ram Gopal Verma didn't do well, it can be remade with a fresh take. Bachchan with his chemistry with the young Jiah Khan, had won the sympathy of the audience. We are sure Sanjay can play the fallen hero (remember Saajan?) well.
Sarkar
Based on the world of politics and crime, the film had Bachchan playing a godfather, a la Bal Thackeray, who doles out justice in his own impetuous style. Sanjay played underworld don effectively in films like Vaastav; to play a godfather should be easy for him. Plus he has a good knowledge of politics (late father Sunil and sister Priya Dutt being politicians). Bachchan's Sarkar was restrained and full of suppressed anger, Sanjay should bring his own nuances to the role.
Hum
The story of a rebel turning into a responsible family man to raise his younger siblings saw Bachchan's seamless transformation from the angry young man to a strict, but playful elder brother. Sanjay who in real life too has matured and mellowed down from his reckless youthful days will be ideal for the role that will showcase both sides of him. The bonding between his character and his younger brothers too should be fun as Sanjay has always shared a great chemistry with other heroes on screen.
