They sold the pictures because there was a bounty on their head. When Angelina was in the hospital pregnant with the twins, one of the paparazzi guys was trying to find a way into her room. The paparazzi agencies hire and fly helicopters over their houses to get even small and blurry pics of the family. It doesn't matter if they are in the US or France, the papz will hire helicopters no matter what. It was the safest and smartest option. The paparazzi were desperate to get the first pictures of Shiloh and the twins when they were born. By taking the pictures with a photographer they trusted, they got to control the situation and make the situation safe for their kids. And they got to control which publication they sold the pics to so not everyone had the rights to them. Only People mag for domestic rights and their partner company, Hello Magazine, for international rights. The photographer was Angelina's friend, not a paparazzi. He works for Getty images as and only took the pics on Angie's request because she trusted him. And what a wonderful gift that the money earned from their family pics was donated to help others who are not as fortunate. And the tax records from their charitable foundation prove that because journalists dug up that information looking for dirt and found nothing. Brad and especially Angelina have never failed to acknowledge how lucky they are and they always give back to others.
And despite their family being one the most hounded ones in the world, they are able to actually aford their kids a lot of privacy. The kids are not photographed as much as people would like to think. The most you see of them is when they are walking through airports. They were in London for like the past two months because Brad's filming there and hardly any pics came out of the kids. Even when they are in Los Angeles, they live in a gated community so the kids are not seen much.
Now on the other hand, someone like Jennifer Garner's kids get photographed like 2 times a day. The photographers know their whole schedule. When they go to church, where they go to school, when they take their daily trip to the farmer's market, when they go to coffee shop. Those kids are photographed every second of their existence but no one says anything because Jennifer brings out the dimples parade and plays her aww shucks routine and everyone is placated. Although the way she is orchestrating the divorce drama updates right now is making even those who like her doubt her intentions.
