I don't know. I think Madhuri by a not so large margin, but like you said, Ash experimented with more roles or more genres. Except for Mrityudand all of Madhuri's different roles fell into main stream movies. Ash's movies like Raincoat or Chokar Bali doesn't. But Madhuri also fell victim to 90s bad stories, and clich over dramatization of emotions.

Overall I don't think Madhuri is as great as the whole industry makes her out to be. Ash is not as bad as everyone makes her out to be.

Madhuri was never an extraordinary actress..she was more famous for dance and beauty..infact i never liked her much, because she looked older than all her male-co stars😆

Aish might have tried different type of roles that does not mean she did a good job. Aish has limited acting range and has boring screen presence.

Both of them are overrated when it comes to acting. Madhuri was better than Ash in Devdas, but I don't know if she actually acted that well or my love for the character she played, is the reason I found her tolerable among those pathetic melodrama going on in the movie. Karishma was better than Madhuri in DTPH, so as Juhi in Gulab Gang. Bipasha looked and acted better than Ash in D2.So I am little confused here.

Madhuri is a better actress, but does not experiment.

Not only compared to Aish, she has not experimented as much as her contemporaries either (be it Sridevi or Monisha Koirala). I have heard, she rejected Khamoshi because there was no dance in the movie (which was later performed by Monisha). Dancing is Madhuri's strength and weakness. The dancer in her never allows the actress in her to grow.

Though Sridevi is a good dancer as well, she never let it overpower her acting skills. In Navrai Majhi song, she could have stolen the show with her dance, but her restraint made her acting (and movie) win. Madhuri's Aja Nachle or Dedh Ishquiya, both relied on her dancing skill rather than acting skill. (That's the reason, I think she is failing. The generation which she catered with her dance have matured. They are looking at performance oriented movies now. Tabu is overtaking Madhuri now).

With Aish. Sorry. She has hype. She has experimented. That's it. Her dancing never has the smooth flow. Instead rigidity. (Some people owe it difference between Bharat Natyam and Kathak. But Sridevi is as trained from south. There is no rigidity in her move). Aish's experiments, will not prove she is a good actress. How well she performed in them prove. Whether Choker Bali and Guzaarish, her expression looks flat.

Madhuri has potential, but does not try hard. Aish tries and fails. Who is better?

Going by the definition of versatile here ( just trying different roles = versatile😆), even Katrina is super versatile..Played a politician in one film, a dulhan in another film, a gymnast in one, an ISI agent in one, a barbie doll in one, a wannabe actress in one,a college student in one etc. etc.So much versatility..Wow 👏😆
