Movie on Kalam's biography

NEW DELHI: A biopic based on Dr A P J Abdul Kalam that will take his thoughts, philosophy and teachings to a global audience is in the works. The producers of ''I Am Kalam'' that was inspired by the former President's life have announced their intention to take on the challenge.

Smile Foundation, an NGO that works in the field of education and empowerment, has plans to make a film to capture Kalam's passion for the youth. The overwhelming response from across the country and world to Kalam's death has proved to be a catalyst for the decision. Kalam passed away in Shillong on Monday evening leaving behind mourners from all walks of life. People inspired by the ''People's President'' thronged to pay him homage in Delhi and Rameswaram where his body was kept. Social media too has seen a very unusual outpouring with people posting pictures, quotes and memories.

Smile Foundation executive trustee Santanu Mishra said,''We were in touch with Dr Kalam for the first film ''I am Kalam'' which was a work of fiction. His thoughts, philosophy, quotes are so powerful that they are meaningful to people across the world. We felt that we should take this story to the international audience. In India you don't need to tell his story, but we need to tell the world so that people know that he was loved not just because he was a President but he was an inspiring human being.''

Mishra who is an IIM-A alumnus said that work would soon begin on research. ''We would like to trace his life from his childhood to his death. There is a lot of information that has been published through his interviews, newspaper articles but we need to fill in the gaps,'' Mishra said.

The movie though is unlikely to address some controversial issues like Kalam's views on death penalty, his support for nuclear proliferation and imposition of President's rule in Bihar that was later challenged by the courts.
